Tadd Dameron's Big Ten - Dial "D & T" for "Dameron & Trumpets" - 1949/1953

This is a terrific contribution compiled and shared by Kent - thanks a lot!
This deserves being exposed on the main blog!

I'm a big fan of Tadd Dameron's and have his official releases (the Navarro/Dameron Blue Note 2CD set and all the OJCs), as well as three of those Boris Rose LPs. But I'm no good as far as digitizing vinyl goes, so this is very, very much appreciated!

Homage to Bud Shank

Bud Shank was one of the greatest alto players in the mainstream scene. Check out his website to read some obituaries that certainly will be more eloquent than what I could write here. Or read Doug Ramsey here.

Allow me a short run-down, though: Shank started out in the big band era, with Charlie Barnett and Stan Kenton, then became one of the mainstays of so-called West Coast Jazz, woring regularly with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, and then recording a run of great albums for Pacific Jazz, with his own quartet (Claude Williamson was the pianist). He also did a fine album for Nocturne and appeared on the Brazilliance albums of guitar player Laurindo Almeida, some of the earliest attempts at fusing jazz with music from Brazil. Later on, he did some more commercial stuff (Michelle...) but continued to play and record great jazz, including being a member of the supergroup "L.A. Four", with Almeida, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne. By coincidence, just a few days before he died, I found the Concord twofer "Two By Four" (Jeff Hamilton had replaced Manne by the time those albums were made). Another highlight is his Muse album, reissued on CD by 32 Jazz as "This Bud's for You", ripe, strong playing by Shank, and a first rate rhythm section backing him: Kenny Barron, Ron Carter and Al Foster.

This post features a huge load of music. There are two later boots, but the main part of it is what Lonehill released on three volumes (4CDs) called "The Bud Shank/Bob Cooper Project". I re-grouped the music so you can get it in portions if you prefer, but I left in enough info so you can re-construct those discs if you get all the portions. I can't offer good scans at the time, but crappy photos of the covers are included.

Part one features the March and April 1957 recordings Bud Shank/Bob Cooper did with Albert Mangelsdorff and a rhythm section led by Attila Zoller on guitar. One of the three dates also featues another recently departed great, Joe Zawinul. Gary Peacock is on bass - he would show up a bit later on some of Shank's Pacific sides.
(Taken from Vols. 1 & 3)
(Use the search-function to look for several other Mangelsdorff shows here!)

Part two features the March 1958 recordings by Bud Shank/Bob Cooper with Shank's regular rhythm section headed by Claude Williamson.
(Taken from Vol. 2)

Part three compiles the fillers that we so often get with Lonehill's "complete" editions. These include: a 1956 Shank quartet recording from NYC with Russ Freeman, the 1956 appearance in Bobby Troup's "Stars of Jazz" TV show by the Bud Shank quartet, one title with Shank/Cooper and the Lighthouse All Stars from 1958, and most important, a recording Shank did in May 1957 with Hans Koller, Mangelsdorff, Attila Zoller, Roland Kovac, Gary Peacock and Karl Sanner.
(Taken from Vols. 1 & 2)
(Use the search-function for more Hans Koller postings!)

Here's more info, hope it's all readable...

And finally, the two great boots - the first has Shank with Pete Christlieb on tenor and a rhythm section headed by Rein de Graaff, the second is just in quartet, with a first-rate British rhythm section.

Hans Koller with Lee Konitz & Lars Gullin - Freiburg 1956 / SWF Big Band (dir. Eddie Sauter) - Donaueschingen 1957

Here's a nice double feature centred on the late great Austrian tenor sax player, Hans Koller. He might be best known for his turn on Oscar Pettiford's great "Vienna Blues" album (Black Lion) with Attila Zoller and Jimmy Pratt, as well as for a run of fine albums on MPS spanning the 60s and early/mid 70s. Zo-Ko-So (with Lee Konitz and Martial Solal) is a stand-out, but all his MPS albums are fine!

Here he is at an earlier stage, from the days when he led the Hans Koller Quartett (with pianist Roland Kovac) as well as co-led a band with pianist Jutta Hipp (soon after to hit the USA with three fine albums on Blue Note). Koller's quartet is joined by two stellar guests, Lee Konitz and Lars Gullin, both among the finest and most individual voices on their respective instruments.

The second part features Hans Koller among the newly founded SWF Big Band of 1957, led by arranger Eddie Sauter. Among the other soloists to be heard are trumpet player Rolf Schneebiegl, trombonist Otto Bredl, Rudi Flierl on baritone, and Dave Hildinger on marimba and piano. The arrangements are quite... well, let me say the remind me of Kenton at his most bombastic... I know Sauter has his own story (about which I'm completely ignorant so far though, I've never heard anything by the Sauter-Finnegan orchestra, for instance).

*** blurb from swr2.de ***

Dave Brubeck - Portland 1959

Continuing the drummer theme, here's a great show featuring Joe Morello! The drum solo ending this partial concert recording is quite amazing!

Brubeck may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there's always Paul Desmond to listen to, one of the few original alto players in modern jazz that has a sound and conception quite unlike Charlie Parker and all his followers (of course Lee Konitz comes to mind, and Charlie Mariano as well - both of them still alive and kicking!)

This is the last post of 2008. It wasn't that great a year here, and it looks like 2009 won't be much better either (much work, trouble with jobs etc etc), and the upcoming financial crisis (it seems it has barely even started yet) won't help making things easier.

Either way, I wish all of you out there a happy new year and all the best for 2009!

Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet - NYC 1956 (FLAC)

Here's a pair of short shows by the great Brown/Roach-Quintet. The second show doesn't feature Max Roach, but it's still that band.

This, like the Kirk show of a few days back, was fixed by the good PervFesser goody, and it was thanks to him that I got this at all! It was originally on dime, but for whatever reason (certainly *not* for Lonehill actually being a legit label!) it was banned there before I even saw it!

Read Barbara Gardener's article on Brownie's legacy (DownBeat, October 21, 1961) here. More about Brown and other trumpet players in jazz here.

Notes from seeder on dime (this was banned there):
Source is a Spanish bootleg from Lone Hill Jazz; they date all the tracks above as April 28, but discographies for Rollins and Brown state otherwise. Additionally, different dates makes more sense as Roach is not the drummer on the May date. This material has also appeared on an Italian bootleg:
Max Roach - Clifford Brown Quintet Live At Basin Street, April, 1956 (Ingo [It] two)

goody's notes:
Pitch of 1, 2 was approx. 82 cents sharp. Pitch of 3 - 5 was approx. 97 cents sharp.

Horace Silver Quartet feat. Lou Donaldson - Live in NYC, 1953

Pardon the long gaps between posts - I'm just too busy in real life, and that will not change all that soon, so I can't promise that posts will appear faster in the weeks to come, sorry!
For now though, one more thing is ready and uploaded, so come back in a couple of days for a second new post!

This here is rather exciting - boots from those days are very rare, and all the more I'm glad the seeder who put up this show on dime allowed me to post it here. He recommended using the Ogg-format, which allows for less compression/loss of quality than MP3, and I followed his wish, so this comes in three files.

Lester Young Live (11-13/16) - 1952-1956 with Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and many others (For Europeans Only #9)

I apologize for the absence of further Prez posts... all the music has been uploaded for a while, but I've been thinking with what to continue after it was done and had no great ideas (now I have). Also as so often "real life" interfered with stuff demading lots of attention and time, and then last weekend some kind of stomach flu hit me... now it has gone on to just your normal olde flu, so things are getting better (he he he... check out the terrific Riverside album Cannonball Adderley and Milt Jackson made under that title, btw!).

So now then, in two more posts I'll share the rest of the Prez live material, this time it's discs 11-13, discs 14-16 will follow soon, and then I'll have a little special treat for x-mas, for fans of more modern sounds (dare I say free jazz?).

Lester Young Live (10/16) - Spring 1952 Sessions (For Europeans Only #8)

Not much I can say... it's Pres, it's getting later in his career, he was different by then, but still good, contrary to those myths surrounding his career... the next volume will have more from this band (but with Knight identified as pianist - I'm not familiar with such early Wynton Kelly to dare a guess... even less so as I don't know Knight at all...). I mentioned already that Aaron Bell had a short spell with Duke Ellington's band in the early 60s, and Lee Abrams, around this time, was on that great 1953 trio session(s) of Al Haig. Not exactly well-known guys, but most definitely thorough pros at their game!

Here's the last date with John Lewis, a date with Earl Knight, about whom I don't know anything, and a single JATP track with Hank Jones, Ray Brown and the late Max Roach (oh hell, if only Hank Jones will stay on a while!)

Lester Young Live (7-8/16) - 1950/1951 with Jesse Drakes, Ted Kelly & John Lewis, Gene Ramey, Jo Jones (For Europeans Only #6)

These sessions are fairly well-known, I think. The quartet dates with John Lewis have been released in various forms, for instance on the Italian bootleg label Jazz View.
I assume it's complete here, or at least as complete as it gets!

Fabulous stuff, to be sure!

Leave some comments, post some impressions, please!

Lester Young Live (4-6/16) - 1950 monster gig with Kenny Drew & Jo Jones (For Europeans Only #5)

Here's the weekend's instalment, a 3-in-1 package, featuring a whole lot of music - and there seems to be even more from these gigs, or that gig, if it was indeed just one, which I doubt if I see the amound of music recorded... Pres is backed here by Kenny Drew and Jo Jones, the bassist's identity isn't clear (Leroy Jackson or Aaron Bell, the later of whom I know from Ellington, well at least from the "Duke Ellington Meets John Coltrane" album on Impulse), and Jesse Drakes is on trumpet - he'll be part of Pres' band on future uploads here, too. Not a great player, really, but good enough, for sure...

Martial Solal - 1959 & 2001 - exclusif

Another bit of music here, finally! I hope you'll enjoy! The links will be posted in the comments, I'm still uploading! This is in the lossless FLAC format (you'll need this if your burner won't allow you to burn the files directly).

Martial Solal is one of jazz' great piano players. Born in Algiers in 1927 he came to Paris in 1950 and soon started recording for Vogue (buy the discs on French Amazon - they have a sale of most "Original Vogue Masters" for 7 euro a pop - lots of great things there!). He got his big break in 1960 when Jean-Luc Godard (one of my semi-gods, by the way) asked him to write the score for his classic debut film, "A bout de souffle".
In 1963, Solal played at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US and an album was released (which was in fact a studio recreation with fake applause) on RCA. His trio in the 60s featured Guy Pedersen on bass and drummer Daniel Humair, with whom he recorded a few albums. Later he regularly played with Lee Konitz (check out "Star Eyes", their great duo album on hat records).
Later he recorded a few classic albums such as "Triangle" (with Marc Johnson & Peter Erskine) and "Ballade du 10 Mars".
He played with Stéphane Grappelli, Michel Portal, Sydney Bechet, Lucky Thompson, Joachim Kühn, Johnny Griffin, Didier Lockwood, and many others. Also he won the Jazzpar Prize (as usual there was an album made on that occasion).
Solal continues to release albums, in solo, with his larger bands ("Dodecaband", "Newdecaband"), as well as with other musicians such as Dave Douglas and Eric Le Lann.

Note: "Suite" has most likely been commercially released on a long-gone 4LP set with music from the ORTF vaults (a perfectly legit release), while the 2001 set most likely has never seen commercial release.
