Sonny Rollins - NYC 1965

Rosario Giuliani - Fribourg 2009

Here's the second contribution from Lewojazz - thanks again!

This recording features the great Italian alto saxophonist Rosario Giuliani. He's accompanied by fellow Italians Flavio Boltro on trumpet, the great Dado Moroni on piano (I once had a chance to hear him at a private party - great musician!), and the French rhythm section of Rémi Vignolo and Benjamin Henocq. A mighty fine band, playing modern mainstream, very "in the pocket" and with plenty of groove - check them out even if you're not familiar with any of the musicians!

Cholet-Känzig-Papaux - Fribourg 2009

This was up for a minute on dime a couple of days ago but was banned for a silly reason - the final seconds of the tracks, where the applause or music is faded, was changed to WAV for editing, and then encoded back to MP2... this makes for most enjoyable listening, but it's a breach of dime rules... the seeder has kindly allowed me not only to share this fine set here, but also the set by Rosario Giuliani from Jazzparade 2009.

Bobby Hutcherson & Tete Montoliu - Köln 1991

More great piano playing, this time by Catalanian pianist Tete Montoliu, in duo with vibes player Bobby Hutcherson.
A friend of mine maintains a great discography of Tete's recordings, and there's Miquel Jurado's book "Tete. Casi Autobiografia" (Madrid, 2005 - in Catalan only, I'm afraid).
In the discography, you'll see that Tete and Hutcherson played Bracknell in 1983 and did a 1984 session for Fantasy, recording enough for two albums - none of it has surfaced, alas (and with Concord owning that huge catalogue, things are lost and down the drain anyway).
This 1991 radio recording - coming in exceptionally good quality - from Cologne then is probably the best document we'll get from their collaboration. A truly sparkling session!

Quite an all star band on this one... you get Randy Weston doing three solo pieces, then a great take of "Niger Mambo" in duo with Art Blakey at the traps, followed by a tenor/bass duo of Griff & the amazing Richard Davis ("Body and Soul" - what else?), and finally they all get together for some blowing on "Now's the Time" and "Wee".

Needless to say I was all over this when it was up on dime... long story, I lost it, got it back (in trade from jazzrita - thank you!) and did the usual editing. It's one of my favourites, that's for sure!

Danilo Perez - Glasgow 1997

Pianist Danilo Perez, born 1966 in Panama, was a small sensation in 1996 with his "PanaMonk" album, interpreting Monk tunes to Latin rhythms. Perez has been a member of Wayne Shorter's terrific quartet since 2000 and continues to work with the rejuvenated master saxophonist.

Here's an earlier set by his trio. I got this one from dime many years ago and had it on my harddisk awaiting to be edited for a long time... this set features him with Avishai Cohen on bass and the great Jeff Ballard on drums.

Kenny Werner - Monterey 1998

Pianist Kenny Werner was born in 1951 and has been on the scene for over three decades now. In the 80s, he had a longer stint with Mel Lewis' Orchestra and he has played in the groups of Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez and others.
Werner also composed big band charts for orchestras such as the UMO Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band and the Danish Radio Big Band.
He has been leading various piano trios ever since the late 70s, featuring musicians such as Tom Rainey, Johannes Weidenmüller or Ari Hoenig. On this 1998 set, he is accompanied by Dave Carpenter on bass and the great Peter Erskine on drums

WDR Big Band feat. Bill Holman, Al Cohn, Sal Nistico & Mel Lewis - Cologne 1987

And one more... luckily, a few German radio stations still maintain their big bands, and while they have to play for (some) bread in between, plenty of fascinating and often mighty fine projects result from their collaborations with various soloists, composers and arrangers.

This post features the the WDR Big Band, which goes back to 1946. From 1957 to 1972 it was led by Kurt Edelhagen, later directors included Jerry van Rooyen and Bill Dobbins. Their recent discography includes projects with Abdullah Ibrahim, Joe Lovano, Hiram Bullock, Maceo Parker, Joe Zawinul, Gianluigi Trovesi, Eddie Harris and Pacquito d'Rivera. They also did projects dedicated to the music of Erik Satie, Kurt Weill, worked with George Gruntz and many others.

Here, you hear them with frequent collaborator Mel Lewis on drums and a great trio of tenor sax players: Al Cohn, Sal Nistico and arranger/leader Bill Holman! Hidden in the band, you'll find a few more interesting names, such as Jon Eardley. Also note Heiner Wiberny's fine soprano solo - these guys can play great jazz when it's called for, and I guess that's where there heart is anyway!

Bennie Maupin - Berlin 2008

Today's shares will be some more MP2 digital radio captures... I'm well aware that the file format is a bit of a drag, but this is the finest you'll get from radio these days, and it's the original file format. I put up a link on top right of the blog (visible on each page), where you'll find some directions!

The files are small and the sound quality usually is fine, so I don't complain!

First then, here's another set by the great Bennie Maupin.

Taken from the biography from his website:

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic “Bitches Brew” album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as, “Big Fun”, “Jack Johnson,” and “On the Corner.” He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name only a few.
Maupin’s own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, “The Jewel in The Lotus” (1974), “Slow Traffic to the Right” (1976), “Moonscapes” both on Mercury Records (1978), and “Driving While Black” on Intuition, (1998). The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin’s work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin’s contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson. Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment. He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in the Los Angeles area.

Here's one sent to me by Trane aka sparti a few months ago. It came mostly untracked, so I did the usual bits of editing, also deleting radio talk while I was at it. Thanks go out to Trane who sent me a bunch of great shows in a trade recently!

Von has to be one of my all-time greats, and there's a post dedicated to him where you can find a bunch of shows, as well as a recording of his with Andrew Hill's trio here, and two somkin' hot 1977 sets from Amsterdam.

Chico has never been quite as big in this house, though he was a fine hot tenor early on. The pairing of him and his father is working just fine though, and with Hank Jones' trio in support, they have deluxe accompaniment here!

Bill Frisell - Salzau 2006 & Berlin 2005

Here's one more by Bill Frisell, again in MP2 format - a long and beautiful set by Frisell's quintet with Ron Miles and the great Gregory Tardy (check him out playing on two stunning Andrew Hill concerts here).

Frisell is a musician I'm slowly but surely getting into... it took me a while to get over his high gloss sound, but I'm there now, as I'm slowly also digging into what I guess one best calls "Americana" of various sorts.
Anyway, Frisell has been doing so much, trios, quintets, the great Bacharach project, his great Intercontinentals band, collaborations with almost everyone (Kenny Wheeler's fabulous "Angel Song" on ECM, a trio with Elvin Jones & Dave Holland, Paul Motian, Eberhard Weber, Hank Roberts, Tim Berne, various projects with John Zorn, Marc Johnson's Bass Desires, Julius Hemphill, Marianne Faithful, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Ginger Baker, Joey Baron, Seigen Ohno, Elvis Costello... the list could go on and on for quite a while!)
As you know I dig this kind of multi-faceted approach, so I guess it was only a question of time until I stumble over Frisell...

Veryan Weston & Luc Ex - Amsterdam 2009

Here's a beautiful concert by Veryan Weston and Luc Ex. Weston can be heard in duo with Trevor Watts here, as well as in a 2003 solo set from Bern. I don't think I've had anything by The Ex or related up here so far - love their collaboration with Getatchew Mekuria!

This here's a very different concert though... Ex says about it: "SOL (...) has an unusual instrumentation and is leaning towards chamber music but then it is often driven by a ‘punky’ energy which is not afraid of being lyrical either.
Sol will combine composed and tightly rehearsed pieces and songs with free improvisation and interpretation.
The repertoire is completely new and contains Ex-Weston-pieces as well songs of Erik Satie, Charles Ives, Burt Bacharach and Berthold Brecht. Every piece is played with intensity, pleasure and an occasional smile."

This should give you quite an accorate idea what the music will sound, let me just add that it's music of great beauty!
And of course, having Ingrid Laubrock in won't do any harm!

Of course, this again is a Joachim-Ernst Berendt production, recently rebroadcast in MP2 format (digital satellite, original files - check the link on top right to find out more about handling MP2 files). Thanks a lot to the seeder over on dime!

As with the 1965 Piano Workshop, this goes in big strides, from Joe Turner to Cecil Taylor, with sets by Thelonious Monk, Steve Kuhn and German pianist Joachim Kühn (who can also be heard on alto sax). The focus is mostly on Ellington, which makes this even more of a treat to my ears!

Globe Unity Orchestra - Berlin 1986

Alexander von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra is one of the longest living large band projects in free jazz. Here they are in Berlin, at roughly half of their run so far (I hope it will continue for another while!), incorporating the usual mix of musicians from Europe, the US, and Japan as well.

This comes from the same edition of the JazzFest that also yielded the 20th Anniversary album for FMP (recorded Nov. 4).

Piano Workshop - Berlin 1965 (feat. Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, John Lewis, Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans & Jaki Byard)

The rest of the 1969 Berlin "Piano for Duke" night will follow tomorrow. To sweeten up the waiting time a bit, here's the "Piano Workshop" from Berlin 1965.

This concert was organised (and MC'ed) by Joachim Ernst Berendt and the idea behind it was to show the development of jazz piano, from Earl Hines to Teddy Wilson, on to John Lewis and Lennie Tristano, and finally Bill Evans and Jaki Byard

The piano players are accompanied by some of the finest bassists and drummers of that era, both Europeans and Americans. The spotlight is on the ivories and ebonies, though, that's for sure!

Highlights included Byard's long improvisation, and the collaborations of Evans/Lewis and Byard/Hines. If you happen to know the identity of Tristano's first piece, please post a comment!

There's a video of this around - plenty of it can be viewed on youtube and similar sites. It would be too much to share the DVD here, I'm afraid. The DVD was bootlegged by ImproJazz, in case you're desperately in need of having it...

This is Jazz History!
In 1965 Joachim-Ernst Berendt, the founder of the Berliner Jazztage (later to become the Jazzfest Berlin) invited the most important jazz pianists then living to the festival.
This is the complete concert - each of them gave some short samples of their playing. The highlight is probably the duo with the oldest (Hines) and the youngest (Byard) pianist.

Monk All Star Tentet - Paris 2000

Here's a great recording by fine band, doing Monk tunes under the direction of Don Sickler. The band includes several Monk collaborators in drummer Ben Riley (also member of Sphere), tenor Johnny Griffin, as well as occasional sidemen Eddie Bert, Steve Lacy and Phil Woods. Sickler himself shares trumpet duties with Jack Walrath, best known from his time with Mingus. Finally, there's Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax, Ronnie Mathews on piano, and David Williams on bass.

Pianist Ronnie Mathews sounds way too smooth - as do all pianists when playing Monk, in my opinion, except maybe Mal Waldron, but then he plays with a very different kind of roughness and edginess then Monk's.
Anyway, if you're not completely opposed to others playing Monk's tunes, you should like this, I hope!

Cecil Taylor - Montréal 1985

Since my previous Taylor share was rather popular, and to sweeten up the wait for the remaining bits of that Berlin piano night, here's another Taylor set in good sound.

It features a transitional band, with Lyons and Frank Wright on saxophones, William Parker on bass, and Henry Martinez on drums.

Cecil Taylor Unit - Berlin 1969

Here's a great one - a digital radio capture of Cecil Taylor's 1969 set at the Berlin. And opposed to what was long thought, it seems to be the full set, too! (Read the message from Lukas Lindenmaier below - you'll need to save that from here if you want it, it's not included in the DL!)
Most likely, this is the finest quality show we'll ever hear from Taylor's 1969 tour with Sam Rivers!

Hi,
after listening to the 1969-1106 recording again, I do believe the 63:30 version we have from the 2009-0619 broadcast (RBB Kulturradio) is the complete performance recorded. There is not cut/editing audible - not in my ears, at least - except for cutting short the final applause. Also, this version is of the best audio quality so far.
Longer versions of recordings from this same date result from - m.h.o - clumsy efforts combining (editing/pasting) fragments from earlier incomplete broadcasts (aired 1969, 1970, and later, by various German radio stations. All these pastiche versions (69 min, 75 min., some even longer) suffer from low audio quality, also harsh cuts and/or inexplicable fades, cross-fades, and overlappings. There is no private audience recording from this performance, as far as I know, documenting „a much longer performance“ as rumourously reported by few eye-/ear-witnesses.
(sidebar): reading from contemporary (1969) festival reviews, 1969-1106 was the opening night of Berliner Jazztage. Performing on this „Piano For Duke“ night were 1) Joe Turner solo or trio?, 2) Steve Kuhn solo?, 3) Joachim Kühn w. Barre Phillips, Stu Martin, Jacques Thollot, 4) Thelonious Monk solo, (then w. J.Turner, Hans Rettenbacher, S.Martin sitting in for the last tune, 5) Cecil Taylor Unit (Lyons, Rivers, Taylor, Cyrille). Not having heard recordings from the first 3 sets, but the complete Monk set, which runs for some 30 min. incl. applause, I guess the CT Unit started at about 2 and 1/2 hours after the beginning of the program - and I don‘t think they played more than the 63:30 on the recording, when „... three quarter parts of the audience derserted ... (quote from Hans Harzheim‘s review in: Jazz Magazine (France) #175 (Feb. 1970) p.11).
