Swedish Living Time Orchestra - Stockholm 2006 (George Russell Fest #7/7) - now on dime
Here's the last one, likely #3 (Paris 1964) is to follow in a few hours!
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=152692
This is quite a bit of an all star affair, with people like Mikkelborg, Broo, Åberg and Stenson present (both of the last mentioned were part of Rena Rama, whose fine Caprice twofer has just been in my CD player). I hope people will be open-minded enough to give this a chance, even though the musicians are less familiar!

Lee Wiley, Bobby Hackett & Joe Bushkin - A Night in Manhattan (1950) - For Europeans Only #1
This is the first of a series of uploads focussing on earlier styles of jazz. The idea is to share single sessions, usually nowhere near the lenght of a CD, that I like a lot and that I think deserve more attention. CDs may have several advantages, but sometimes they're just not right, either... they run too long if I want to have 20 minutes of music, they store away short dates with other material and often sort of hide it... so the focus in this series shall be pre-LP dates, mostly (not much plans yet... I'll be surprised myself!) of pre-bop styled music, such as Lee Wiley, Bunny Berigan or Mildred Bailey (that's the two artists I know what to share of, right away...)
The tag For Europeans Only (after our favourite Tadd Dameron's composition of the same title) means that this will all be music that's older than 50 years and hence in public domain over here in Europe. If you're an American and disagree with the 50 year limit, please just stay away!
Lee Wiley singing with Max Kaminsky's band
Lee Wiley started out in the early thirties (check out my compilation of early material here) and sang with the Dorsey Brothers, Max Kaminsky, Joe Bushkin and others, mostly working with Condon-related musician by the late 30s. She never quite made it big, maybe because she disappeared or had low visibility at various points of her career. However, this 1950 album matching her with the most sympathetic pianist Joe Bushkin, and trumpeter/cornetist Bobby Hackett, brought her back to attention and has to be considered one of the highlights of her career.
A remembrance by Singer Carol Sloane (from AAJ):
A short review from AAJ:
I couldn't find a large scan of the original cover (didn't see it on Gokudo - the two other Columbia 10" albums are there, however), but here's the cover of a CD pairing all three albums:
Just for the record: the two other albums are worthwhile enough, if just for Lee's singing!
But Night in Manhattan is the finest part of the three, for sure! One of her career highlights! And here finally it is:

A remembrance by Singer Carol Sloane (from AAJ):
I was singing in the Big Room of an elegant club in New York City called The Blue Angel. One night after the show, I joined some friends in the Art Deco lounge and saw a sight I'll never forget: a woman, draped in sable, seated at one of the black leather upholstered banquettes, surrounded by five or six gentlemen in black tie. The men were clearly enchanted with this glamourous creature, lighting her cigarettes, pouring her champagne, laughing ever so delicately at her witticisms, and not a one paying the slightest attention to darling Bobby Short, singing Cole Porter tunes on a little upright over in the corner with all the persuasion and enthusiasm he possesses to this day. "WHO is that?", I asked. "THAT" is Lee Wiley!"
I was dazzled and thrilled to see the great Lee Wiley, and determined I'd be the center of attention at a similar party one day... Best I've done so far is that night backstage at the Newport Jazz Festival when some guy offered me a joint, a bottle of beer and a ride home.
A short review from AAJ:
Lee Wiley: Night in Manhattan (1950)
This is the quintessential album from the woman widely regarded as the first great cult singer in vocal jazz. Unlike her wonderful and groundbreaking series of songbook 78s of a decade earlier, this 10” EP was carefully recorded to capture Wiley's unique vocal timbre in clear sound. Unlike the sublime, Ralph Burns orchestrated West of the Moon that was still to come, this album features Wiley singing her signature songs in the company of some of her favorite jazz musicians. The latest CD incarnation preserves the original EP's 8-song line up and then adds some Irving Berlin and Vincent Youmans material Wiley recorded for Columbia. These additional tracks feature good songs and terrific singing smothered by awful dual piano accompaniment. However, the first 8 tracks, the original Night in Manhattan EP, are reason enough to buy this CD.
I couldn't find a large scan of the original cover (didn't see it on Gokudo - the two other Columbia 10" albums are there, however), but here's the cover of a CD pairing all three albums:

George Russell - Berlin 1970 & Don Ellis - Berlin 1968 (George Russell Fest #4/7) - now on dime
Just up: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=152557
Don Ellis played with Russell early on (documented on a few of the later's great early 60s album on Riverside, see my earlier Russell post for more info), so it was pretty logical to combine these two shorter sets. The Russell composition was released twice on Soul Note, as far as I know. About Ellis I don't know that much. Two of his earliest albums for Pacific Jazz have been reissued on CD by Blue Note/EMI, and I also have his Columbia album "Electric Bath". Earlier on he did a few small group albums (for Candid mainly, but one for New Jazz/Prestige - another OJC to get before it's gone, I assume...), and later on he did a few more albums for Columbia (some of which have been reissued on CD by the Wounded Bird label).

George Russell Fest on dime
I'm trying to squeeze in a little George Russell (wiki) festival on dime before leaving for two weeks vacation in Vienna (July 1 to July 16).
Here's the listing of planned seeds:
instalments:
#1 - George Russell - Lenox 1960 (re-seed)
#2 - George Russell - Newport 1964 (edited re-seed)
#3 - George Russell - Paris 1964-10-01 (I seeded this before - won't re-seed it now, hopefully someone else steps in)
#4 - George Russell Berlin 1970-11-05 & Don Ellis Berlin 1968-11-08
#5 - George Russell Living Time Orchestra - Perugia 2002-07-15 (edited re-seed)
#6 - Lydian Sound Orchestra w/Charles McPherson - Vicenza 2005-05-21 (re-seed)
#7 - Swedish Living Time Orchestra - Stockholm 2006-05-15 (re-seed - maybe someone else helps me on this one, time may end too soon for this to be included...)
As for George Russell... I consider him one of the most fascinating characters of our beloved music. His albums - I own most of his 50s to early 60s work - belong to the most cherished ones.
:: A couple of albums on RCA ::
Jazz Workshop (his debut from 1956) with Russell not playing himself, but on board are Art Farmer, Hal McKusick & Bill Evans!
New York N.Y. (1958), an ambitious and probably only partly successful project with appearances by John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Jon Hendricks (don't miss the recent Pacific/EMI reissue of his great "Another Git Together" with Cannonball, Pony Poindexter, Wes Montgomery & others!), Al Cohn, Art Farmer, Jimmy Cleveland, Bob Brookmeyer, Benny Golson and many others.
:: Three on Decca ::
First there's his 1960 album Jazz in the Space Age, one of the crowning achievements of his career, including Bill Evans again, but also Paul Bley (they're both soloing together on one tune!), with a big band featuring Ernie Royal, Dave Baker, Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton, Hal McKusick, Charlie Persip, Don Lamond, Bob Brookmeyer and others.
Then he also did two small group albums, only one of them I have: George Russell Sextet at the Five Spot, a studio album, its title notwithstanding. This album features a Russell working band for the first time: Dave Baker (trombone), Al Kiger (trumpet), Dave Young (tenor sax), Russell (piano), Chuck Israels (bass) and Joe Hunt (drums). They play a bunch of fine tunes, including Carla Bley's "Dance Class" and "Beast Blues", as well as Miles' "Sippin' at Bells", Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" and two originals, one each by Baker and Russell.
His third Decca album, In Kansas City, came in 1961. I am not sure if it's ever been on CD, at least it has never been readily available.
:: Four albums for Riverside ::
This group of albums (I have all except "The Stratus Seekers" - it's on my painfully long Fantasy buying list...) features some great musicians and lots of great music with the definitive Russell sound!
The first one was Stratusphunk (1960) - it features Russell with five of his Lenox School of Jazz students: Al Kiger, Dave Baker, Dave Young, Chuck Israels & Joe Hunt (same band as on the Five Spot album). There's another early Carla Bley tune here, and by now the Russell signature sound is in full blossom!
Ezz-Thetics (1960) has Don Ellis, Eric Dolphy (outstanding bass clarinet on "'Round Midnight"), but also Russell mainstays Dave Baker and Joe Hunt again. Steve Swallow is on bass this time, and Russell has finally settled on the piano bench by this time (he started out on drums - you can hear him on a few tracks on another OJC disc, the reissue of Lucy Reed's Fantasy album This Is Lucy Reed, recorded in 1957). This album features the Miles Davis tune "Nardis" (presumably written by Bill Evans), another original by Baker, as well as three great Russell compositions, including "Lydiot" and the title-tune.
The Stratus Seekers (1962) is by a slightly more obscure band, with Bill Pierce (alto sax) making this a septet. Present again are Ellis, Baker, Hunt and Swallow. Paul Plummer is on tenor. The menu is all originals this time (one each by Kiger & Baker, the rest by Russell).
The last of the four, The Outer View (1962) features Don Ellis, Paul Plummer & Steve Swallow again, with Garnett Brown (trombone) and and Pete La Roca (drums). There's a wonderfully lydianized take on Bird's "Au Privave", the great "D.C. Divertimento", Carla Bley's "Zig-Zag", Russell's title-tune, as well as his arrangement of "You Are My Sunshine", adding Sheila Jordan on vocals (seems this was her recording debut - quite an audacious one!).
:: later albums ::
My collection is still *very* thin there... in fact I have only two additional albums:
The great MPS double album At Beethoven Hall (reissued in the 90s on Motor Music's MPS CD series, which also included albums by Mangelsdorff, Sun Ra and others). This great live album features Don Cherry, Bertil Lofgren (trumpet), Brian Trentham (trommbone), Ray Pitts (tenor), Cameron Brown (bass) and Albert Heath (drums). The concert includes a remake of "You Are My Sunshine" and also a lenghty Lydian suite including Russell's re-workings of "Bags' Groove", "Confirmation" and "'Round Midnight" (by Milt Jackson, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, respectively).
The last one I have is one of this two 80s Blue Notes: The African Game (1983). This is a big band affair, again a rather ambitious and only partially successful work (but hey, New York, N.Y. is still considered a classic, and rightfully so - this one, however not... also rightfully, I guess, but it has a bunch of good moments).
The main beef of Russell's later years has been released on the Italian outfit Soul Note - however, these albums rarely turn up here and I haven't tried yet to find them online. There are too many things I want to buy all the time anyway...

Bex-Luc-Lopez - Paris 2005 - now on dime
My latest seed on dime is dedicated to a great French/Spanish trio of improvisers: organist Emmanuel Bex, guitarist Sylvain Luc and percussionist extraordinaire Ramon Lopez. Lopez did a great solo drum album on Leo Records, he was the only one of the three I was familiar with back when this was broadcast, but I quickly started adoring the other two as well, after having heard this great concert!

Fantasy Jazz Catalogue 2004
I just put this up for a friend, so I thought I'd share the link here, as well:
http://rapidshare.com/files/39618551/Fantasy_2004_catalog.pdf
This is the 2004 (last one printed, as far as I know) edition of the great and gone Fantasy label's jazz catalogue, including the labels Prestige & New Jazz, Riverside & Jazzland, Contemporary, Debut, Milestone, Fantasy, Specialty, Bluesville, Swingville, etc. etc.
If you are - as I am - on a hunt for already or soon out-of-print Fantasy reissues, this might be helpful to get an overview. The list of titles I'm still looking for is shockingly long, and I'm quite desperate, in fact... seems pretty useless in even trying to get all I ever want - I'd have to find a rich uncle in America first, and then he'd have to die an leave me with a few thousands (or rather tens of) $$ in order that I could complete my collection!

Lee Wiley - Unrequited Love's a Bore, Yeah... - A Selection of Songs, 1931-1940
Lee Wiley (1908-1975) is one of my favourite singers. The now defunct (it seems, alas! Let me know if you have other news!) Baldwin Street Music sub-label Devil's Music did a series of four complete volumes of Lee Wiley, covering her earliest beginnings in 1931 up to the Cole Porter album in 1940.
The music in this post is taken from these four volumes - my own personal selection.
The Spanish bastards also did a few Lee Wiley releases, most notably a 4CD set covering the years 1931-1951 and duplicating the master takes of the Devil's Music volumes, but in much worse sound. Still these four discs cover material that is not available readily elsewhere, to my knowledge.
Also on Definitive are two more 2CD sets, one covering the 50s (minus the RCA albums) and one collecing some live recordings.
The 50s set duplicates the Columbia Sessions also available as part of the (now out of print) "Classic Columbia Condon Mob Sessions" collection on Mosaic (MD8-206). These were the "Nights in Manhattan" album , as well as two more songbooks, dedicated to Irving Berlin and Vincent Youmans.
The Devil's Music volumes 1-3 also consist partly (mostly for Vol. 2) of radio broadcasts from the 30s, while Vol. 4 contains the complete, glorious Cole Porter album sessions, with Bunny Berigan (who was involved with Lee more than just musically...) in fine form.
More live material - in mediocre sound, but the music is great! - can be found on Uptown's "Music of Manhattan, 1951" (UPCD 27.46). This disc contains a lovingly compiled booklet with tons of information and photos from one of the gigs documented on the disc. Lee is featured with small groups including trumpet soloists Billy Butterfield, Muggsy Spanier, Buck Clayton and Red Allen. Also present among others are Joe Bushkin, George Wettling, George Wein, Milt Hinton and Jo Jones.
Mosaic Records also has recently put out one of the RCA albums, "West of the Moon", in their Mosaic Single releases, I just got my copy and like it a lot!

Malcolm Braff & Contrechamps - Cully 2007 - now on dime
My latest seed on dime is dedicated (once again, must be the fourth or fifth) to the great pianist Malcom Braff from the Romandie (via Senegal and a few other places).
Braff leads various projects, my favourite being the trio Braff-Oester-Rohrer. Another trio he has with Alex Blake on bass (he's familiar from working with Randy Weston) and Yaya Ouattara on percussion a review of their album "Yele" on Unit Records can be read here (in french).
Then Braff also leads a larger ensemble, "T.N.T.", with Bänz Oester on bass and Yaya Ouattara on percussion, and added musicians Matthieu Michel or Flavio Boltro (trumpet), Samuel Blaser (trombone), Cyrille Bugnon (sax), Minino Gary (percussion) and Julio Barreto (drums).
All of these bands and another earlier one ("3io Qwartet", a piano trio with bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Pascal Portner) have been subject of dime seeds of mine.
I'll also have a special Braff recording for the blog, a duo set with trombonist Samuel Blaser, sometime in the future.
Anyway, the show now up on dime is a special thing, featuring Braff with the classical chamber ensemble Contrechamps. The original idea was that Braff would re-arrange compositions by György Ligeti, but he was denied to do that by the heirs/owners of rights and hence proceeded to write his own music. The outcome of this, a 35 minute work, as well as a 10 minute solo improvisation as encore, can now be heard on dime, here:
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=151490
Also check out Malcolm Braff's MySpace site!

Sonny Rollins - Arnhem 1967
Sonny Rollins w/Ruud Jacobs & Han Bennink in 1967 - an effin' great recording! No more words needed, check it out here - yeah, right HERE ON THIS BLOG NOW! Check the comments for the links!

So then, here's the great, GREAT concert from Sonny in Arnhem 1967. I tried doing some remastering but found the result not worthy enough, so what I seed here is just a fixed version (without duplications, one-channel-dropouts etc. - see notes for details), but with the same general sound as the previous re-seed, and in fact as the original seed I got it from.
This has been re-seeded by nocturnalnph a few days ago here, consider this an update for all the corrections, but as I said, not for sound:

In short:

* Sonny is effin' hotter than hot! *
* Bennink is smokin'! *
* bass is audible, too! *
* THIS IS A MUST HAVE! *

Notes:
- CD1#2 came as "Four - Don't Stop the Carnival", but it's mainly "Four" with Sonny quoting various other tunes in a free-flowing improvisation
- CD1#3 was followed by an incomplete version of CD2#1, the intro was longer on CD1#3, I spliced that onto CD2#1 and deleted the rest
- CD2#3 came as just "Three Little Words" - I am not sure if there are two or just one other tunes following or what they are.

Wiki has an entry for singer Bulat Okudzhava, of whom I've never heard before.
I don't understand one word of Russian, but still his songs - poems rather, he wanted rather to be a poet than a singer/songwriter, it seems - do connect to me quite strongly. The musical accompaniment is very simple, just Okudzhava himself strumming on guitar...
While I'm not familiar with much of French chanson, he is often compared with Georges Brassens.

:: blurb from www.swr.de ::

Lisette Spinnler Quintet - Basel 2005 - now on dime
Here's a beautiful set of music by one of the most talented young jazz singers of the Swiss scene, Lisette Spinnler from Basle:
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=150991
It really was quite a surprise for me to hear this show on radio - I did have no expectations whatsoever and it was an extremely pleasant surprise! Spinnler has a beautiful voice and does lots of improvising, the band is great, with pianist Colin Vallon providing some beautiful compositions as well. The music of this group - it's a group, really, not just a singer with a backing band - has influences from African music and isn't afraid of playing (with) beautiful melodies. A great show, in my opinion!

Sonny Rollins - Arnhem 1967 - now on dime
Sonny Rollins w/Ruud Jacobs & Han Bennink in 1967 - an effin' great recording! No more words needed, check it out here:

So then, here's the great, GREAT concert from Sonny in Arnhem 1967. I tried doing some remastering but found the result not worthy enough, so what I seed here is just a fixed version (without duplications, one-channel-dropouts etc. - see notes for details), but with the same general sound as the previous re-seed, and in fact as the original seed I got it from.
This has been re-seeded by nocturnalnph a few days ago here, consider this an update for all the corrections, but as I said, not for sound:

In short:
* sound is fair enough! *
* Sonny is effin' hotter than hot! *
* Bennink is smokin'! *
* bass is audible, too! *
* THIS IS A MUST HAVE! *

Edits:
- delete silence/noise before CD1#1
- moved mark CD1#1/2: +6sec
- copied right channel into left on CD1#2 (0:09-3:07) applied 3dB cut on left channel (copied part got much louder than the right channel originally was/is)
- deleted 0.4sec dropout @ 23:09 in CD1#1 (skip remains audible)
- deleted tiny dropout @ 24:02 in CD1#1 (skip remains audible)
- moved mark CD1#2/3: -1.5sec, deleted 0.1sec dropout
- copied right channel into left on CD1#3 (5:20-6:09, 7:08-8:53, 11:22-11:25) applied 3dB cut on left channel (copied part got much louder than the right channel originally was/is)
- separated CD1#4 from CD1#3
- spliced intro of CD2#1 (a bit too loud) from duplicated partial version of same tune that followed CD1#3 (after the 13:12 cut), deleted duplicated track (7:34, faded at end)
- copied right channel into left on CD2#1 (6:15-8:21) applied 3dB cut on left channel (copied part got much louder than the right channel originally was/is)
- moved mark CD2#1/2: -1.6sec, delected 0.1sec dropout
- deleted tiny dropout CD2#2 12:17

- deleted first 5.4sec of CD2#3 (duplication of applause of CD2#2)
- copied right channel into left on CD2#3 (0:00-0:06) applied 3dB cut on left channel (copied part got much louder than the right channel originally was/is)
- moved mark CD2#3/4: +38sec, deleted 0.1sec dropout around old mark, deleted noisy applause and silence (18.6sec), added fade-out
- deleted last 7.5sec of CD2#4 (duplication)
- moved mark CD2#4/5: +9sec, deleted 0.1sec dropout around old mark
- deleted silence at end of CD2#5 (4sec)

Renaud Garcia-Fons - Zürich 2000 - now on dime
Renaud Garcia-Fons is a great bass player born near Paris in 1962. He has played, among others, with Cheb Mani, Dhafer Youssef and Kudsi Ergüner.
His "Oriental Bass" programme has also been released on a great disc on the German Enja label, one of the finest addresses for jazz with a world tinge, mostly Mediterranean or near Eastern, with albums by Gianluigi Trovesi, Michel Godard, the project "La Banda", Buhan Öçal, Gabriele Mirabassi, Pino Minafra and others.

Sal Nistico - Locarno 1985 - now on dime
Another upload on dime, by a musician I can't remember seing up there before: Sal Nistico
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=150643
BLOGGER SUCKS! I lost my text twice already, don't feel like tiping it up a third time and then losing it when I hit "save now" - ha!
Here's what I typed up in a notepad, but it's only a third of what was supposed to be here:
Joe Haider has his own label, JHM (Joe Haider Music), where one of his fine early albums, 1971's "Katzenvilla" with Isla Eckinger and Pierre Favre, is available on CD, as well as a great double disc release by the Slide Hampton - Joe Haider Orchestra, "Give Me a Double", featuring such fine musicians as Dexter Gordon, Benny Bailey and Idrees Sulieman. This was recorded live in 1974.
Also read this interview done by Tubby Hayes.
I also made mention of the three great Woody Herman "Jazz Casual" shows. They're available commercially and Nistico uses every chance he gets to shine there!

Note: I labelled this as "part 1" - either I missed part 2 of these 2006 re-broadcasts, or there wasn't any, I can't remember. #3 is a set-closer, so likely this is culled from two sets, which makes me think it's rather unlikely that there was a second re-broadcast.

Martial Solal - 1959 & 2001 - exclusif
Another bit of music here, finally! I hope you'll enjoy! The links will be posted in the comments, I'm still uploading! This is in the lossless FLAC format (you'll need this if your burner won't allow you to burn the files directly).
Martial Solal is one of jazz' great piano players. Born in Algiers in 1927 he came to Paris in 1950 and soon started recording for Vogue (buy the discs on French Amazon - they have a sale of most "Original Vogue Masters" for 7 euro a pop - lots of great things there!). He got his big break in 1960 when Jean-Luc Godard (one of my semi-gods, by the way) asked him to write the score for his classic debut film, "A bout de souffle".
In 1963, Solal played at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US and an album was released (which was in fact a studio recreation with fake applause) on RCA. His trio in the 60s featured Guy Pedersen on bass and drummer Daniel Humair, with whom he recorded a few albums. Later he regularly played with Lee Konitz (check out "Star Eyes", their great duo album on hat records).
Later he recorded a few classic albums such as "Triangle" (with Marc Johnson & Peter Erskine) and "Ballade du 10 Mars".
He played with Stéphane Grappelli, Michel Portal, Sydney Bechet, Lucky Thompson, Joachim Kühn, Johnny Griffin, Didier Lockwood, and many others. Also he won the Jazzpar Prize (as usual there was an album made on that occasion).
Solal continues to release albums, in solo, with his larger bands ("Dodecaband", "Newdecaband"), as well as with other musicians such as Dave Douglas and Eric Le Lann.

Sorry for the lack of new uploads here, I'm too busy of late. But I'll post some Mildred Bailey soon!

This falls under the genre "electrotango", I think... don't care much and don't know much, but I like it. It's a mixture of acoustic tango music with influences from electronic/dance music and beats etc.

M'Barka Ben Taleb - Sfinks Festival 2006 - now on dime
This concert caught me by surprise - I had no idea what to expect - I was too lazy to even google around, just recorded it without knowing a word about M'Barka Be Taleb. It features "Altocalore" a great project mixing music from Naples (the place where M'Barka Ben Taleb has been living for several years) with Arab and Eastern music. May be sounding like "world music" at its worst, but it works mighty fine and the outcome is touching on an emotional level and simply beautiful!

blurb from sfinks site (http://www.sfinks.be/seebio.php?groepid=765):
Passionate rhythms from Naples' Arab underbelly
Those who attended Eugenio Bennato and Pietra Montecorvino's concerts at Sfinks, have already heard her. M'Barka Ben Taleb was responsible for the passionate arabic vocals. For several years she's been living in Naples where she found a second home after a Tunis childhood. Last year, after collaborating with many Italian artists, she started her first solo project: Altocalore, a cd linked to the movement she started in 2002. Altocalore acts on the assumption that the multicultural society is now a fact and we better deal with it in as positive a fashion as possible. M'Barka performs a straightforward mix of Arabic, Eastern and Italian music. In 'her' Naples, all these cultures interact and together they are the warm heart of the city. Twice at Sfinks, Thursday ánd Saturday.

Colin Vallon Trio - Zurich 2007 - now on dime
Samuel Rohrer / Colin Vallon / Patrice Moret
Colin Vallon's a very talented young piano player from the Romandie. He played at the jazzclub Moods in Zurich two days ago. Yours truly was there right at the front taping the proceedings and I'm happy to offer them on dime now:
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=149871
The trio's drummer, Samuel Rohrer is a force of nature, one of the greatest drummers I ever heard, truly! Bassist Patrice Moret was a bit low in the mix alas, I tried to fix that a bit in Cool Edit, but since he was low at the actual concert, not too much could have been done. Moret has played with Erik Legnini, for instance, and also with Patrick Muller's trio.

Notes:
Taped in front row, center.
Bass in centre, drums on right, piano on left side of stereo spread (very modest stereo spread, as usual).
I did some tweaking to get a bit more of bass, but the bass was often hard to hear in the actual concert, so it can't be too great on the recording, anyway. Moret has a beautiful and actually big sound - he played without pick-up, just had a microphone in front of his bass, which is something I adore and far too many bassists do nowadays (I saw Buster Williams with Benny Golson's Clifford Brown tour, and of course Williams is a giant, but the sound he got with that pick-up was downright ugly and a huge letdown). Anyway, the sound honchos that evening obviously didn't really care about the bass being audible... too bad. But to hear Moret better, go listen to my Patrick Muller trio EspaceJazz seed, recorded almost exaclty a year ago, June 19, at RSR studio in Lausanne.
The drums are too loud in some spots (CD1#4 at the beginning, for instance), but that, too, reflects the balance of the actual sound at the concert.

Colin Vallon Trio
Ailleurs
The members of this band all share a strong awareness of sound quality and timbre, which sets them apart from other musicians. Three distinct instrumental voices – Vallon’s «singing» piano, Pat Moret’s «full reverberating» bass and Samuel Rohrer’s «polyvalent» drums – blend into a highly complex ensemble sound; here, too, the band has hardly anything in common with the traditional jazz piano trio conventions.

Barney Wilen is one of my favourite jazz musicians, no doubt! Our crazy friend Norm seeded an abridged version of this 1989 Paris concert yesterday, I dropped him a note to let him know I have more. He then pulled his version and the mods went all wild about it, it seems... hence I acted quick and prepared my own version for seed last night, and there 'tis:

Note on edits:
- all FM talk removed, as far as possible without losing any of the music
- deleted fm talk at end of #1-5,9,11,12
- added fade-in (not from zero!) at beginning of #3,4,10,11 (was far too loud since the announcer mic caught much of the music, too)
- applied 6 dB cut at beginning #5,11,12 for same reason
- added fade-out at end of all tracks
- deleted short bits of noisy silence at end of #7-10,12
- during the applause following the tunes you can hear where the announcer mic is turned on (applause gets louder) - I didn't edit that as usually around there I began the fade-outs
Note on sound:
- #5 all of a sudden has lots more of fm hiss, but it gets better again later, yet remains a bit inconsistent
- an A- rating seems fair, alltogether, though it may start out at A/A- and get close to A-/B+ at some moments

Pierre-Luc Vallet Trio - now on dime
I'm lagging behind with my dime pointers here... Today I posted this fine set of Pierre-Luc Vallet's piano trio (he also leads an organ trio) recorded Tuesday at the studios or RSR 2 (Espace 2). The link: http://www.dimeadozen.org//torrents-details.php?id=149742
**********************************************************
I am more than happy to be able to seed some more piano torrents at the moment!
Yesterday I heard (and taped) Colin Vallon's trio at a local club, today I might catch Jean-Paul Brodbeck. An FM recording not fit for dime of Brodbeck's will be put up later on my blog (http://ubu-space.blogspot.com/), too.
The preceeding seeds of this little series are here:
Hans Feigenwinter Trio - Basel 2007
Thierry Lang "Lyoba" - Cully 2007
As for Pierre-Luc Vallet, I only heard his organ trio on another RSR 2 seed before (would there be interest here?) and this beautiful set of classic piano trio jazz came as quite a great surprise!
Find a sample from #3 below to check it out yourself!
