Mostly Other People Do the Killing - Moers 2009

Here's a partial set im MP2, short and small, for those who're not sure... a full two-set concert will be posted later on. MOPDTK are a fabulous band led by bassist Moppa Elliott and featuring the great trumpet player Peter Evans, saxophonist Jon Irabagon, and Kevin Shea on drums. Their music is both modern and reaching back at the tradition at the same time, but tradition in their case means not only hard bop but also music by the likes of Ornette Coleman, Roy Haynes and Roland Kirk, as can be seen from their funny album covers quoting classics.

Peter Evans, one of the musicians who stands out in the memory from last year’s festival,
returns to Moers with a streetwise quartet headed by the bassist Moppa Elliott.
The group’s album “This is our Moosic” is a tongue in cheek reference to the legendary
Ornette Coleman album from 1960 and is testimony both to their respect for the history of jazz,
but also to their intention to redefine “jazz” in the 21st century.

Ellington Legacy Orchestra - Aarau 1999

I was contacted about this by Peter Ugrin, the son of trumpet and violin player Petar Ugrin (1944-2001) playing here. Peter is himself a violin player. There are two beautiful tracks by Petar on his page, in particular, "Ozri Se V Gnevu" is stunning!

Ugrin was the only one to possibly take the role of Ray Nance, playing both trumpet and violin. The band here is a star-studded one, including a handful of Ellingtonians, most notably Aaron Bell, Duke's longtime bass player, who's on piano here. John Lamb and most of the brass players were with Ellington at one time or the other, too. In addition, there's another late trumpet great, Benny Bailey, and the late great John La Porta who can be heard playing a beautiful clarinet solo. Charli Persip is a fine big band drummer - one of his first gigs was with Dizzy Gillespie's 1956/57 orchestra!

So let me dedicate this post to Petar Ugrin and to his family.

Lenny Popkin - Paris 2002

Now here's a very special contribution, shared kindly by bhowani. It took me a while to edit the raw files I got, I did my best to remove clicks and make the listening as seemless as possible (since the moderators of the fine French jazz live show "Jazz Club" talk in between most tunes, there were a lot, and there remain some rough cuts).

Anyway, let's skip the technicalities and delve into the music. Popkin is one of the survivors of the Lennie Tristano school - and arguably one of the finest performing tenor players of these days where individualism is so trendy but can hardly be found. Popkin was born in 1941 and together with his wife Carol Tristano (son of Lennie's), pianist Connie Crothers (known also for collaborations with Max Roach) and a few others carries the flame and keeps the Tristano brand of jazz alive.

Also, Lenny Popkin doesn't take place in the web... or hardly does.

Wayne Shorter - Village Vanguard 1965 (with Herbie Hancock)

There was a request for this set in a recent Sonny Rollins set I put up, where Hancock was among the sidemen. This, alas, is no pleasure to listen to, sound is really bad. But of course it's still worth trying... probably a good way is to play one or two songs, and then once your ears got used to the sound, start anew again.

So what do we get here? A pure classic show by Wayne Shorter, recorded at the Village Vanguard with Herbie Hancock, Gary Peacock and Tony Williams - if this was in prime sound, it might as well be a favorite, but as it is, it's more a curiosity of historical value.
This seems to come from the midst of a period of inactivity of Miles' band - Peacock was one of the bass players who subbed occasionally when Carter was unavailable (others were Richard Davis and Al Stinson). Coincidentally, Miles' return to the scene took place at the Village Vanguard and with Peacock as well, in late 1965 (see here).

Bobby Hutcherson & Tete Montoliu - Köln 1991

More great piano playing, this time by Catalanian pianist Tete Montoliu, in duo with vibes player Bobby Hutcherson.
A friend of mine maintains a great discography of Tete's recordings, and there's Miquel Jurado's book "Tete. Casi Autobiografia" (Madrid, 2005 - in Catalan only, I'm afraid).
In the discography, you'll see that Tete and Hutcherson played Bracknell in 1983 and did a 1984 session for Fantasy, recording enough for two albums - none of it has surfaced, alas (and with Concord owning that huge catalogue, things are lost and down the drain anyway).
This 1991 radio recording - coming in exceptionally good quality - from Cologne then is probably the best document we'll get from their collaboration. A truly sparkling session!

Randy Weston - Chicago 1984 (with Johnny Griffin, Richard Davis & Art Blakey)

Quite an all star band on this one... you get Randy Weston doing three solo pieces, then a great take of "Niger Mambo" in duo with Art Blakey at the traps, followed by a tenor/bass duo of Griff & the amazing Richard Davis ("Body and Soul" - what else?), and finally they all get together for some blowing on "Now's the Time" and "Wee".

Needless to say I was all over this when it was up on dime... long story, I lost it, got it back (in trade from jazzrita - thank you!) and did the usual editing. It's one of my favourites, that's for sure!

Danilo Perez - Glasgow 1997

Pianist Danilo Perez, born 1966 in Panama, was a small sensation in 1996 with his "PanaMonk" album, interpreting Monk tunes to Latin rhythms. Perez has been a member of Wayne Shorter's terrific quartet since 2000 and continues to work with the rejuvenated master saxophonist.

Here's an earlier set by his trio. I got this one from dime many years ago and had it on my harddisk awaiting to be edited for a long time... this set features him with Avishai Cohen on bass and the great Jeff Ballard on drums.

Kenny Werner - Monterey 1998

Pianist Kenny Werner was born in 1951 and has been on the scene for over three decades now. In the 80s, he had a longer stint with Mel Lewis' Orchestra and he has played in the groups of Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez and others.
Werner also composed big band charts for orchestras such as the UMO Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band and the Danish Radio Big Band.
He has been leading various piano trios ever since the late 70s, featuring musicians such as Tom Rainey, Johannes Weidenmüller or Ari Hoenig. On this 1998 set, he is accompanied by Dave Carpenter on bass and the great Peter Erskine on drums

Phil Woods - poss. Avignon 1970

A smoking hot set by Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine, performing the "Executive Suite" at a concert that might be from Avignon 1970. If you know more about this or can help pinning it down, please post a comment!

This needed quite some work to be done, but it's well worth it! Woods was one of the best around this time, and one who kept the jazz flame burning... and still does!

And one more... luckily, a few German radio stations still maintain their big bands, and while they have to play for (some) bread in between, plenty of fascinating and often mighty fine projects result from their collaborations with various soloists, composers and arrangers.

This post features the the WDR Big Band, which goes back to 1946. From 1957 to 1972 it was led by Kurt Edelhagen, later directors included Jerry van Rooyen and Bill Dobbins. Their recent discography includes projects with Abdullah Ibrahim, Joe Lovano, Hiram Bullock, Maceo Parker, Joe Zawinul, Gianluigi Trovesi, Eddie Harris and Pacquito d'Rivera. They also did projects dedicated to the music of Erik Satie, Kurt Weill, worked with George Gruntz and many others.

Here, you hear them with frequent collaborator Mel Lewis on drums and a great trio of tenor sax players: Al Cohn, Sal Nistico and arranger/leader Bill Holman! Hidden in the band, you'll find a few more interesting names, such as Jon Eardley. Also note Heiner Wiberny's fine soprano solo - these guys can play great jazz when it's called for, and I guess that's where there heart is anyway!

Bennie Maupin - Berlin 2008

Today's shares will be some more MP2 digital radio captures... I'm well aware that the file format is a bit of a drag, but this is the finest you'll get from radio these days, and it's the original file format. I put up a link on top right of the blog (visible on each page), where you'll find some directions!

The files are small and the sound quality usually is fine, so I don't complain!

First then, here's another set by the great Bennie Maupin.

Taken from the biography from his website:

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic “Bitches Brew” album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as, “Big Fun”, “Jack Johnson,” and “On the Corner.” He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name only a few.
Maupin’s own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, “The Jewel in The Lotus” (1974), “Slow Traffic to the Right” (1976), “Moonscapes” both on Mercury Records (1978), and “Driving While Black” on Intuition, (1998). The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin’s work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin’s contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson. Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment. He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in the Los Angeles area.

Here's one sent to me by Trane aka sparti a few months ago. It came mostly untracked, so I did the usual bits of editing, also deleting radio talk while I was at it. Thanks go out to Trane who sent me a bunch of great shows in a trade recently!

Von has to be one of my all-time greats, and there's a post dedicated to him where you can find a bunch of shows, as well as a recording of his with Andrew Hill's trio here, and two somkin' hot 1977 sets from Amsterdam.

Chico has never been quite as big in this house, though he was a fine hot tenor early on. The pairing of him and his father is working just fine though, and with Hank Jones' trio in support, they have deluxe accompaniment here!

Bill Frisell - Salzau 2006 & Berlin 2005

Here's one more by Bill Frisell, again in MP2 format - a long and beautiful set by Frisell's quintet with Ron Miles and the great Gregory Tardy (check him out playing on two stunning Andrew Hill concerts here).

Frisell is a musician I'm slowly but surely getting into... it took me a while to get over his high gloss sound, but I'm there now, as I'm slowly also digging into what I guess one best calls "Americana" of various sorts.
Anyway, Frisell has been doing so much, trios, quintets, the great Bacharach project, his great Intercontinentals band, collaborations with almost everyone (Kenny Wheeler's fabulous "Angel Song" on ECM, a trio with Elvin Jones & Dave Holland, Paul Motian, Eberhard Weber, Hank Roberts, Tim Berne, various projects with John Zorn, Marc Johnson's Bass Desires, Julius Hemphill, Marianne Faithful, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Ginger Baker, Joey Baron, Seigen Ohno, Elvis Costello... the list could go on and on for quite a while!)
As you know I dig this kind of multi-faceted approach, so I guess it was only a question of time until I stumble over Frisell...
