Mostly Other People Do the Killing - Moers 2009

Here's a partial set im MP2, short and small, for those who're not sure... a full two-set concert will be posted later on. MOPDTK are a fabulous band led by bassist Moppa Elliott and featuring the great trumpet player Peter Evans, saxophonist Jon Irabagon, and Kevin Shea on drums. Their music is both modern and reaching back at the tradition at the same time, but tradition in their case means not only hard bop but also music by the likes of Ornette Coleman, Roy Haynes and Roland Kirk, as can be seen from their funny album covers quoting classics.

Peter Evans, one of the musicians who stands out in the memory from last year’s festival,
returns to Moers with a streetwise quartet headed by the bassist Moppa Elliott.
The group’s album “This is our Moosic” is a tongue in cheek reference to the legendary
Ornette Coleman album from 1960 and is testimony both to their respect for the history of jazz,
but also to their intention to redefine “jazz” in the 21st century.

Lenny Popkin - Paris 2002

Now here's a very special contribution, shared kindly by bhowani. It took me a while to edit the raw files I got, I did my best to remove clicks and make the listening as seemless as possible (since the moderators of the fine French jazz live show "Jazz Club" talk in between most tunes, there were a lot, and there remain some rough cuts).

Anyway, let's skip the technicalities and delve into the music. Popkin is one of the survivors of the Lennie Tristano school - and arguably one of the finest performing tenor players of these days where individualism is so trendy but can hardly be found. Popkin was born in 1941 and together with his wife Carol Tristano (son of Lennie's), pianist Connie Crothers (known also for collaborations with Max Roach) and a few others carries the flame and keeps the Tristano brand of jazz alive.

Also, Lenny Popkin doesn't take place in the web... or hardly does.

Rosario Giuliani - Fribourg 2009

Here's the second contribution from Lewojazz - thanks again!

This recording features the great Italian alto saxophonist Rosario Giuliani. He's accompanied by fellow Italians Flavio Boltro on trumpet, the great Dado Moroni on piano (I once had a chance to hear him at a private party - great musician!), and the French rhythm section of Rémi Vignolo and Benjamin Henocq. A mighty fine band, playing modern mainstream, very "in the pocket" and with plenty of groove - check them out even if you're not familiar with any of the musicians!

According to "rillenheini" (best wishes and thanks!) the first two evenings were recorded by Austrian radio station "ORB". This recording has been made on the 2nd of August, as ORB-DJ Ernst Grohotolsky has told to "rillenheini". The setlist also stems from Mister Grohotolsky.

Bennie Maupin - Berlin 2008

Today's shares will be some more MP2 digital radio captures... I'm well aware that the file format is a bit of a drag, but this is the finest you'll get from radio these days, and it's the original file format. I put up a link on top right of the blog (visible on each page), where you'll find some directions!

The files are small and the sound quality usually is fine, so I don't complain!

First then, here's another set by the great Bennie Maupin.

Taken from the biography from his website:

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic “Bitches Brew” album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as, “Big Fun”, “Jack Johnson,” and “On the Corner.” He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name only a few.
Maupin’s own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, “The Jewel in The Lotus” (1974), “Slow Traffic to the Right” (1976), “Moonscapes” both on Mercury Records (1978), and “Driving While Black” on Intuition, (1998). The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin’s work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin’s contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson. Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment. He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in the Los Angeles area.

Bill Frisell - Salzau 2006 & Berlin 2005

Here's one more by Bill Frisell, again in MP2 format - a long and beautiful set by Frisell's quintet with Ron Miles and the great Gregory Tardy (check him out playing on two stunning Andrew Hill concerts here).

Frisell is a musician I'm slowly but surely getting into... it took me a while to get over his high gloss sound, but I'm there now, as I'm slowly also digging into what I guess one best calls "Americana" of various sorts.
Anyway, Frisell has been doing so much, trios, quintets, the great Bacharach project, his great Intercontinentals band, collaborations with almost everyone (Kenny Wheeler's fabulous "Angel Song" on ECM, a trio with Elvin Jones & Dave Holland, Paul Motian, Eberhard Weber, Hank Roberts, Tim Berne, various projects with John Zorn, Marc Johnson's Bass Desires, Julius Hemphill, Marianne Faithful, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Ginger Baker, Joey Baron, Seigen Ohno, Elvis Costello... the list could go on and on for quite a while!)
As you know I dig this kind of multi-faceted approach, so I guess it was only a question of time until I stumble over Frisell...

Veryan Weston & Luc Ex - Amsterdam 2009

Here's a beautiful concert by Veryan Weston and Luc Ex. Weston can be heard in duo with Trevor Watts here, as well as in a 2003 solo set from Bern. I don't think I've had anything by The Ex or related up here so far - love their collaboration with Getatchew Mekuria!

This here's a very different concert though... Ex says about it: "SOL (...) has an unusual instrumentation and is leaning towards chamber music but then it is often driven by a ‘punky’ energy which is not afraid of being lyrical either.
Sol will combine composed and tightly rehearsed pieces and songs with free improvisation and interpretation.
The repertoire is completely new and contains Ex-Weston-pieces as well songs of Erik Satie, Charles Ives, Burt Bacharach and Berthold Brecht. Every piece is played with intensity, pleasure and an occasional smile."

This should give you quite an accorate idea what the music will sound, let me just add that it's music of great beauty!
And of course, having Ingrid Laubrock in won't do any harm!

Bill Frisell & HR Big Band play Monk & Mingus - Fankfurt 2008

Bill Frisell is one of the most interesting and intriguing guitar players around. He has done so much, in the most different kinds of settings and bands! Here he is backed by the HR Big Band, playing Mingus and Monk in arrangements by the great Mike Gibbs!

A while ago I posted plenty of shows by great drummers, use the search function to find some stuff by and with Roy Haynes, Joe Chambers, Daniel Humair and others (I can't guarantee all files are still active though).

Monk All Star Tentet - Paris 2000

Here's a great recording by fine band, doing Monk tunes under the direction of Don Sickler. The band includes several Monk collaborators in drummer Ben Riley (also member of Sphere), tenor Johnny Griffin, as well as occasional sidemen Eddie Bert, Steve Lacy and Phil Woods. Sickler himself shares trumpet duties with Jack Walrath, best known from his time with Mingus. Finally, there's Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax, Ronnie Mathews on piano, and David Williams on bass.

Pianist Ronnie Mathews sounds way too smooth - as do all pianists when playing Monk, in my opinion, except maybe Mal Waldron, but then he plays with a very different kind of roughness and edginess then Monk's.
Anyway, if you're not completely opposed to others playing Monk's tunes, you should like this, I hope!

Michel Camilo - Bern 2007

And finally, something more bread and butter... a piano trio!

Michel Camilo is a virtuoso piano player that has mostly lost me... I heard a solo set of his in the mid 90s that I enjoyed, but then all I heard sounded rather boring to my ears. I keep checking out some of his shows on dime though, and this one sounded pretty exciting, so I felt like offering it here, too!

If you enjoy some exuberant, playful and happy piano music, this will be right for you! And on this darkish wet and snowy day, it will help enlighten my place, that's for sure!

Michel Godard - Offenburg 2004

And one more for the lovers of the tuba - a very fine AUD capture of Michel Godard's band "Cousins Germains" with the saxophones of Wolfgang Puschnig (Austrian of course) and Christof Lauer, Herbert Joos on trumpet, the devilish looks and guitars of Marc Ducret, and drummer Wolfgang Reisinger. A mighty fine band, that also has a CD out.

Godard has done many interesting projects, as I mentioned in the previous post. Among the finest are his own Castel del Monte discs, released on Enja. Medieval touches can be heard in this set as well, thanks to Godard's use of the serpent, a very old predecessor of the tuba.

This came as a crappily tracked 2CD set, I shortened it a bit here and there, retracked the whole show, and not the music can be enjoyed in all it's greatness!

Michel Godard & Dave Bargeron - Köln 2001

Tuba anyone? Two big horns for two big men... Dave Bargeron and Michel Godard are among the finest tuba players in today's jazz scene. Bargeron has been around for a while and has frequently turned up on the bass trombone chair of bigger bands, Godard has done all kinds of things, including a long stint in the fine band of oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil.

Here they are together, doing the flight of the bumble bee and other crazy stuff. An there's a squeezebox as well... but don't be scared, this is actually a very musical set, too! Kenwood Dennard keeps the beat funky in this all 'round fine show!
