Joe Maneri - Athens 2004 (r.i.p.)

Joe Maneri, the micro-tonal composer and tenor sax player, died on August 24th this year. Here's a belated tribute, a pretty good AUD tape of his trio's set at 2004's ACME. His trio consisted of son Matt Maneri on viola (Matt has played with Matthew Shipp, Roy Campbell, Joe McPhee and others) and Randy Peterson on drums.

With rapidshare having changed its policy and links getting deleted after 90 days of inactivity soon, expect a flurry of posts in the coming weeks, including "archival" posts listing all the still available links. I have plenty of files I uploaded more than 90 days ago and that had zero downloads, as I've not shared them.

Btw, wuala is no option, they allow 1-3GB for free, and 100 GB (which is what I use with RS at this time) would cost 160$ per year... that wouldn't account for new uploads. Also, with there hardly being any comment on the music, I wouldn't expect any donations to come in to cover that, so I'll just arrange and files will be deleted faster than before. And no, I'll not do re-ups all the time!

Brötzmann-Mangelsdorff-Bennink - Berlin 1985

Here's another one I posted on dime a few months ago. I got it from there and brought it back into circulation as a little Brötz-flood was going on. This features longstanding musical partners Brötzmann and Han Bennink along with the great Albert Mangelsdorff.

Brötzmann can also be heard on first and on the third of seven shows so far posted here by the various formations of the Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart (more to come!). Both shows incorporate the classic Brötzmann/Van Hove/Bennink trio into larger settings under the leadership of Wolfgang Dauner.
In addition to that, I also posted one of my own recordings by the power trio of Brötzmann/Pliakas/Wertmüller.

Albert Mangelsdorff was featured in several posts here, though of course they still fail to give you a complete picture of this great musician:

And finally, Bennink was on one of the first posts that actually contained music, a Sonny Rollins trio concert from 1967 (shared in MP3 format).

Elliott Sharp - SyndaKit - Zurich 2003

Here's another one from those dime-party shows, this time be Elliott Sharp and a very interesting mix of musicians (I'll not be so ignorant like the guy on BBC's "Jazz on 3" and just talk of "some fine Swiss musicians" when they broadcast last year's Willisau set by John Zorn, Bruno Amstad, Koch-Schütz-Studer & guests).
Koch-Schütz-Studer happen to have been incorporated into Sharp's band here. They're a great trio on their own, check out some of their or Koch's own releases on Intakt!
Then, there's Hans Hassler, who usually plays folksier sounds (though by no means in a conservative or retrospective/nostalgic manner). He has a recent disc out on Intakt as well (bagatellen review).
Then there's another local on piano, Claudia Ulla Binder, and Charlotte Hug is on viola - she also appears in duo settings with Sharp.
Trumpet player Thomas Heberer and saxophonist Tobias Delius have both been playing with the ICP Orchestra (Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and others). Trombone player Curtis Fowlkes is a member of the Jazz Passengers, a group he co-founded with fellow ex-Lounge Lizard Roy Nathanson. Fowlkes has also appeared with Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Marc Ribot, and many others (including Sheryl Crow).
Bassist Dave Hofstra and drummer Sim Caine are from the US. About Caine (or is it Cain?) I don't know much, Hofstra I've first heard on a great disc by Philip Johnston. Here's an interview with Cain (as it's spelled there).

The music that's subject of this post comes from a concert from the great Taktlos festival. I didn't attend it, alas, but the radio broadcast included, as far as I know, some of the first part - a loose series of improvisations in variyng line-ups - and all of the second part, the actual piece of work "Syndakit" (I'm not sure the band is called "Syndakit", too, but this is how I have it in my files).
This is some challenging though highly enjoyable music!

May 10 - Taktlos Festival: Rotefabrik - Zurich
I've performed many times at the Rotefabrik over the years and it feels quite comfortable especially with many old friends in attendance. We're asked to make the evening more lengthy than Basel - a questionable strategy. In addition to the musician-chosen small-groups, I also conduct unisons. This set does not feel as taut with energy as Basel though there are some beautiful things - it's unfortunate to have an external time frame on improvisation. We're free of this for the second set of SyndaKit and the group takes off, performing a rocking version with exciting textural changes, layers, and unisons. The audience is wildly enthusiastic as are we! A fine end to the performance aspect of this tour.
In the morning I return to Firenze for a recording project with the percussionist-composer Alessio Riccio and return to NYC on the 13th. While always happy to come home, I dread facing the stifling and depressing atmosphere of the US under Bush. Because of the war and fears of anti-Americanism, we found there to be many less Americans in Europe, with sizeable numbers to be found only in Firenze. It's embarrassing to be seen as a representative of the heinous policies of the junta - it's fortunate that as performers, we have the possibility of explaining that there is resistance in the US, albeit well-hidden.

Frank Gratkowski - Zurich 2004

Next one from the dime series - this is gone over there already. At least it was snatched 82 times (and it was a re-seed - here's my little write-up from dime:

This recording by Frank Gratkowski is from a concert I attended. It was pretty good, though they followed a terrific set by Barry Guy's New Orchestra, which left me totally exhausted. Heard on its own though, it's fine (and funny enough, the Barry Guy doesn't really work on tape, although live it was one of the most intense concert I ever witnessed).

The Abaton Trio of Sylvie Courvoisier, Mark Feldman and Erik Friedlander do both compositions (by Couvoisier) and free improvisations. They have a very good 2CD set out on ECM with one disc of both. Here you get both sides, too, though this comes from a festival more directed towards composed modern/classical music (I don't know how that is called in English, I'd call it "Neue Musik" or something, not much helpful either, as a term of description).

This is one of my own audience recordings, in quite ok sound.
I deleted the applause since it disrupted the musical flow (It felt that way already during the concert).

The concert was one of the more amazing ones among those I witnessed... Zeena Parkins is great, she went from sitting there like a classical performer to rocking around like some hardrock guitar player, changing between a regular harp and an electronic one, as well as a glockenspiel and some electronics...
Ikue Mori, as usual, sat behind her i-book, rather motionless, which I dislike in concert settings... I like the optical aspect as well as the musical, and those concerts I saw that were of the "eai" kind, I usually found boring just because there was nothing "going on" in a physical/motional way.
Anyway, I have fond memories of this, and I also enjoy the duo's official release, "Phanton Orchard", quite a lot!

I don't think I've shared this show before, so I hope there'll be some interest!

The Controindicazioni were initiated amongst others by the late Mario Schiano. If there's interest, I could maybe share the big 4CD package that was up on dime when Schiano died. Next one in my series of shares by the Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart, led by pianist Wolfgang Dauner. This finds Dauner in a most interesting setting: some of the Dutch guys (Tristan Honsinger, Altena), Rüdiger Carl and Hans Reichel, as well as Irène Schweizer and the enigmatic Stephan Wittwer, plus poet Anton Bruhin. Quite a mix!

Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart - February 1974 (1/7)

This is the first of a little series of posts dedicated to reza. He asked for some shows with Wolfgang Dauner, in return for a favour.

Dauner was born in Stuttgart on December 30, 1935. In 1963 he founded his first jazz trio with Fred Braceful and Eberhard Weber. A few years later he started playing around with synths and jazz-rock, and for fifteen years, starting in 1969, he led the "Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart", which is the subject of my little series.
All of these shows have been shared on dime, and I am offering them here just as I got them (the only difference being I had to rip them from my CDRs, as I don't keep FLAC files - I'd need a dozen 1TB drives to do that... anyway, EAC logs are included).

The Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart has collaborated, among others, with Jean-Luc Ponty, Terje Rypdal and Zbigniew Seifert. Seifert is present on the first show from 1974, along with Albert Mangelsdorff, the Peter Brötzmann Trio and others. The musicians on the six shows to be shared later include: Maarten Altena, Toto Blanke, Rüdiger Carl, Günter Christmann, Palle Danielsson, Gerd Dudek, Raphael Don Garrett, Trilok Gurtu, Tristan Honsinger, Peter Kowald, Didier Lockwood, Paul Lovens, Paul Lytton, Evan Parker, Paul Rutherford, Irene Schweizer, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Stephan Wittwer, and others.

In 1970, the Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart played the Montreux Jazz Festival with a line-up of Dauner, Dudek, Ack Van Rooyen, Joki Freund, Eberhard Weber and Cees See (info). If anyone has a recording of that show, please share it!
