This was up here before ... one of my favourite Hill recordings of more recent vintage. Might well be the complete concert - the Hill discography doesn't really help though, it only has the shorter, FM source (CD1 #3-5, CD2 #1-3, CD2 #4) listed.

John Zorn - Masada 1998-08-29 Willisau
Coincidentally, I'm getting re-acquainted with Masada after many years ... prompted by some online discussion. And I'm loving it, just as I loved it back when I first heard it - you guessed it: this radio broadcast, live from Willisau, was my first ever exposure to this group's glorious music.
If you happen to be a Masada connoisseur, please help with the setlist!
This is available both as FLAC and as MP3 (320 kbs).

James Brown - Paris 1967
(re-post from November 2010)
Good gawd! Papa's got a brand new bag!
One of my latest musical discoveries - or rather in this case a re-discovery - is James Brown. I've had his "CD of JB" ever since I was in High School, but I never quite followed up digging into his music, although I did get to know Maceo Parker's music a little bit better over the years (his disc "Soundtrack" on Minor Music was one of the most-played back in those years).
Anyway, JB... give the drummer some! Gotta give the funky drummer some!
As all too often, I wasn't just content owning the "Star Time" 4CD set, but rather I went out and got all those fine Polydor compilations, too: "Roots of a Revolution" with lots of early sides beginning with his very first sessions and leading up to 1964, "Messing with the Blues", mostly from around the early 60s, and as a companion to those, the amazing first "Live at the Apollo".
Then on with the finest band he ever had, convered on the great compilation "Foundations of Funk - A Brand New Bag: 1964-1969", which has a nice companion in "Jazz". From the same era, there's "Soul Pride: The Instrumentals 1960-1969", and then the album "Soul on Top", cut with Louie Bellson's big band (playing Oliver Nelson arrangements and including Maceo on tenor as the sole soloist).
There are a few live recordings of that band, first of them is "Live at the Garden" (actually recorded at the Latin Casino), then there's the smoking hot "Live at the Apollo - Volume II", and finally "Say It Live and Loud: Live in Dallas 08.26.68".
This live show from Paris falls in there, some months after the second Apollo gig, and if anything, the band is even tighter and the show even hotter! It's also around on DVD and it's unbelievable to watch! One track (It's a Man's Man's Man's World) was officially released on a US DVD set (not internationally released, to my knowledge, and useless to me as it's Code 1... haven't seen it myself), hence that track is absent here. Would be very welcome to see a commercial release of this one, too - the sound quality is great, for sure - matching the quality of the actual performance!
Just check out "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"!
And dig what might be the very best "Prisoner of Love" ever!
The line-up below has been amended compared to the tags and info you'll get. The number of musicians is correct at least, and Maceo, St. Clair, Waymon Reed and Pee Wee Ellis, as well as the Byrds are definitely confirmed. Also two drummers and two guitar players are visible on the video. JB plays organ during one of the tunes (on the others it's Pee Wee, I think), and at the end of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", those weird drum rhythms are his, too...

Cecil Taylor - Berlin 1969

Last one for the moment - a lengthy set by the Cecil Taylor Unit of 1969 that included Jimmy Lyons, Andrew Cyrille and the late, great Sam Rivers. Not sure if this is the complete show or if something has been edited out ... but at more than 60 minutes, I guess it could well be the whole enchilada.

"...the 45:++ from radio broadcast is - most probably - the closing section of the performance. There is another radio broadcast 15:45 with something like the first section, and there seems to be a missing link between these broadcasted parts -some say the gap is but a few minutes, others say it might be more, up to 25:00 - I don't know, I only have the two broadcast fragments, and it seems most likely no private audience tape of this concert exists." --H. Lukas Lindenmaier 05.01.03

Mulgrew Miller Trio & Stefano di Battista - Salzau 2006
Mr. Miller developed his voice in the 1970s, combining the bright precision of bebop, as exemplified by Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson, with the clattering intrigue of modal jazz, especially as defined by McCoy Tyner. His balanced but assertive style was a model of fluency, lucidity and bounce, and it influenced more than a generation of younger pianists.
~ Nate Chinen (NY Times obituary)
I've just found this show on one of my drives ... it's not been around for a while, for those who prefer, I just upped it over on dime, too.
Alas, I only saw Miller in person once, around twelve years ago. He played in duo with Kenny Barron on two grand pianos as part of a package that also included Benny Green and Eric Reid, who played the second set. The seasoned players taught the young ones plenty of lessons, that night.
Thank you for all the great music you left us with, Mr. Miller.

Coltrane, Griffin and Mobley (l.t.r.) at the recording session for "A Blowin' Session" (BLP 1559, 1957) - photo by Francis Wolff/Mosaic Images
A short but rare set ... Mobe and Griff reunited (alas, Coltrane was gone by that time, but would he have enjoyed joining them, had he been around?) for some blowing.
This was posted over on dime, and the good pervfesser helped me getting it as right as possible. Happy to bring this new set to the blog.

:: notes ::
This comes from two sources:
#1 and #2 up to 0:06 are from a less good-sounding source - originally 107 cents sharp
#2 0:06-end and #3 are from a better source - originally 49 cents sharp
#4 is unknown, the Italian radio announcer says it's Coltrane's "Bessie's Blues".
Date for the second source was given as September 10, 1969.
The Italian announcer suggest that this possibly comes from another concert, maybe even with a different rhythm section?
The outro of the stage announcer at the end of #3 calls the venue "Rheinpark", I got this with "Tanzbrunnen" as venue.
Further, the next - closing - act is announced, "Seventeen Men and Their..." [cut off]
goody on #4: Original was approximately 49 cents sharp, if playing in the key of F. The original, however, is in Eb. Perhaps it really isn't Bessie's Blues, even though it's announced so. That could explain this blues in the key of F. The head of this doesn't sound like Bessie's Blues either. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of this tune.
In comment #3310523 [on dime] rillenheini wrote something like this:
According to a concert review in Jazz Podium 10/1968 the venue definitely is "Rheinpark". Original broadcast by WDR I on September 8, 1968, 7:30 p.m.
The Kenny Clarke - Francy Boland Big Band, announced as "Seventeen men and their music", played on the same day (September 1st) and their recordings were in the same radio broadcast.

:: notes ::

Carla Bley - Carla's Christmas Carols (Berlin 2008)
I posted this one two years ago... so here it is again, right in time for x-mas. Must be the most idiosyncratic versions ever done of Christmas Carols - gotta love it!
Her carols have also been released officially on ECM - the review by John Fordham in the Guardian is still out there - and I've gotten the CD in the meantime and enjoy it a lot!

A Piano Jazz Christmas (1994)
Yes, it's that time already again... I recommend you get June Christy's fine album This Time of Year if you want to hear something strong and personal. There's also Carla Bley's Carla's Christmas Carols (I'd be happy to bring back up the live recording I've shared of this - just put in a comment).
Those might be my favorites in the rare, very rare cases I want to hear Christmas music. I do have the Dylan disc and give it two or three spins I guess, but no Bing and Ol' Blue Eyes for me, please.
Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" show seems to be the longest-running radio show... and a wonderful one at that. Three albums of Christmas music have been released, but to my best of understanding, none of the music from the broadcast below has been officially released. Marian herself isn't part of the show, instead Bill Cosby is the host. There are several fine piano players involved, including the late Hilton Ruiz and the great Randy Weston, as well as Shirley Scott, Cedar Walton and younger players Michael Weiss and Cyrus Chestnut.
I've re-tracked this version (thanks go out to the kind dimer who put this out initially!), fixing some minor track-mark issues. As it is now, if you prefer to omit all the Cosby chatter (I for one most certainly do), you can just delete those tracks and the rest will be nicely programmed (a bit of talk remains, as Randy Weston introduces one of his tunes while playing piano underneath).
I hope you'll enjoy, and I wish those of who care a happy holiday season.

r.i.p. Amy Winehouse - Arendal 2007
Amy Winehouse has just left the building... another talented artist unable to cope with too many problems. Blessed with great talent she was, for sure, and the news of her death caught me unexpected as I kept hoping she'd be able to rise and stand, eventually... wasn't going to be. Shit.
Here's a terrific boot from 2007 that was up here before - Amy in full power and... in control...

Zim Ngqawana - Willisau 2009
As a tribute to Zim Ngqawana, who left this world much too early, here's his concert from 2009's Willisau Jazz Festival. Zim must be jamming in that other place with Kippie, Dudu, Mankunku, Manenberg and all the other cats that left us all too soon.

r.i.p. Zim Ngqawana
The great South African saxophone player Zim Ngqawana died Monday evening in Johannesburg, after suffering a stroke in the afternoon.
Check out this live video from the Guinness Jazz Festival or check out this beautiful tune from one of his albums.
What a huge loss.
