The highlight of that night of course was the pairing of Irene Schweizer with the fine trio of Lake/Workman/Cyrille. It took them a while to find common ground, but after the first of three marvellous duos, they were ready to play, continuing a marvellous set!

The highlight of this second night, to me, was the opening show which saw Oliver Lake playing with lots of fire, backed by the loose drumming of Dieter Ulrich and the great, earthy and boomy bass of Christian Weber. To me, whom it took a while to get to like Lake a bit, this was easily the best playing I ever heard of him. I do own two Trio 3 albums (the one on Palmetto plus the recent Intakt, Lake's Ballad quartet album, and a few other things where he turns up as a sideman, further recommendations for strong discs of his would be welcome!
The Brötzmann set was physical... not sure what to make of it, but it definitely was an experience. The volumes were almost impossible to take, some glasses broke, the whole place was vibrating from Wertmüller's bass drum and Pliakas' extremely fast bass lines. Yet the music was static and not going anywhere, just sort of happy to stay within itself. And imagine that: on tenor, Brötz had trouble cutting through the others' playing... on alto though, his playing got so piercing as to almost hurt.

Bright Moments! Rahsaan live at the Village Vanguard (1974)

This is my own fixed version of a show shared on dime in several versions. This here was an upgrade and it sounds very, very good, considering it's an audience tape from the 70s!



All I did was fix some marks, add some fades and some such, sound was left unchanged, except of course for the compression to MP3 @ 320 kbs. Links in comments, as usual.

Dr. Lonnie Smith - Zurich 2007

In November I had the pleasure of hearing the Turbanator live - the first time I saw one of those really heavy, fat organists in action (I've seen Larry Goldings before... not bad, but very different in style!). I posted my recording of the event on dime a while ago and mentioned that here, in a previous post. I had a couple of requests to share this show here as well, and I'm happy to have it up on RS by now, in MP3 @ 320 - so here 'tis!

The following is a quote from my earlier post:

Holy smokes! Smith was da shit, as they say!!!!!!!!

The band really got it together in the second (almost 90 minute! the first was more than an hour already) set. They did some standards (Sweet and Lovely, Willow Weep for Me, a beautiful alto feature Harlem Nocturne), the Beatles' Come Together in the funkiest ever version, and several Smith originals - great great music, loud and stinky as that kind of music ought to be! (I did some thinking and I'm quite sure Larry Goldings' Trio was the only organ group I've heard live before... now that was a whole different thing last night!)

The encore closes disc 1, as the second set + encore was too long for one CDR.

The sound rating is conservative, the sound was shitty at the concert, and I think I caught it about as good as possible with my equipment.

For this share, I re-grouped the tracks and the encore is where it belongs (at least in the tags... I notice only now that the info file doesn't reflect that change - if you want to burn this onto CDRs, you'll have to do as the info file and the setlist below shows)

Alfred Jarry und die Passion als Radrennen betrachtet - WDR 3 Feature

Here's one for fans of Alfred Jarry (his "Ubu Roi" was/is one of my favourite plays, as is easy to guess). This radio feature was broadcast late last year to commemorate Jarry's 100th birthday.
It's in German, so I guess the interest for this will be limited, however I know of some people who certainly will enjoy this!

Gut bewaffnet trat Jarry der Welt entgegen. Mit Rennrad, Pistole und einer bizarr-maskenhaften Sprechweise war er die phantastischste Erscheinung unter allen Exzentrikern der Zeit. Die chauvinistische Belle Époque strotzte vor Korruption und Optimismus und las realistische Romane. Mit Don Quijote als selbstironischem Vorbild zog Jarry dagegen für ein "ergänzendes Universum" der Imagination zu Felde. Nur das Stahlross hieß Clément und nicht Rosinante, denn er war ein unwiderstehlicher Frauenverächter. Seine geistige Bewaffnung borgte Jarry von erkenntniskritischen Philosophen wie Henri Bergson oder von der Thermodynamik eines Lord Kelvin. Im Gegensatz zu seinen fortschrittsfeindlichen symbolistischen Künstlerfreunden sah er in technischen Konstruktionen unerforschte Maschinen der menschlichen Imagination. Jarrys bekannteste Erfindung neben seiner eigenen Person ist König UBU, eine Figur und ein Theaterstück, die die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts revolutionierten. Am 1. November 1907 starb Alfred Jarry mit 34 Jahren. Sein eigentliches literarisches Werk bleibt bis heute nahezu unbekannt.

Chonk, Charlie, Chonk! - king ubu presents Charlie Christian (For Europeans Only #12)

I have recently played some music by Charlie Christian again and figured why not share some of it here. My selection is neither a greatest hits nor an elaborate selection of rarities, rather just some great things (like the studio session with Lester Young and Count Basie), jams (including the famous studio jam of the Goodman band waiting for Benny to appear, as well as a lenghty jam from one of John Hammond's second "From Spirituals to Swing" concert), an encounter with Fred Astaire, and live recordings with Jerry Jerome (all of them!) and the Benny Goodman sextet.

The complete info is listed below - I did not break the music into CD chunks, as I have all of it on various CDs and will not burn this to CD myself, rather just copied it all onto my ubupod.

I hope you like the selection, and I hope you can ignore the occasional sonic problem in the live recordings. The infectuous groove Christian sets, in solo as well as in his forceful comping, is something you just have to dig, no matter about sound quality!

There has been some demand for more freely improvised stuff up here, so this is a first show I offer here, another one, by Veryan Weston, will soon be ready, too.

There's a bit of info on this duo, also known as "Voices and Tides", on the homepage of Franziska Baumann's. Baumann and Matthias Ziegler also have a disc out on Leo Records, called "Voices and Tides". What I offer here is one of their live shows, from the 2006 edition of the jazz festival in the beautiful city of Schaffhausen, which is mostly dedicated to present Swiss bands and projects.

This here is rather exciting - boots from those days are very rare, and all the more I'm glad the seeder who put up this show on dime allowed me to post it here. He recommended using the Ogg-format, which allows for less compression/loss of quality than MP3, and I followed his wish, so this comes in three files.

Emil Viklicky Trio with Daniel Pezzotti & special guest Franco Ambrosetti - Round about Martinu - Basel 2007 (FM) - now on dime!

Here's a very special concert by czech pianist Emil Viklicky's trio with two swiss guests, Daniel Pezzotti on cello and Franco Ambrosetti on trumpet. The concert took place as the one jazz even during the Bohuslav Martinu music festival in Basel in November and the first set was broadcast on swiss radio DRS 2.

Viklicky is probably unknown in the US and also remains little-known around here, but Franco Ambrosetti should be a bit better known. He's one of most important contemporary jazz musicians (hey, not "adult contemporary" or how that crap is named in the US!) of Switzerland, kind of an elder statesman by now, who has played with just about everyone and has a lot of disc availabe, some of them on the great Enja label. He was also subject of some previous seeds of mine (one as a leader only, I think).
Daniel Pezzotti has also worked with Thierry Lang's project dedicated to Swiss folk music (their Cully 2007 was subject of a seed of mine).
Anyway, this isn't really a third stream thing or some such, rather a very successful integration of different strains of music into one organic and very beautiful project. I was aware of Viklicki (the only other show I have is mostly commercially released, alas), but this still caught me totally off-guard - a stunning recording, in my humble opinion!

David Liebman / Ellery Eskelin - Tübingen 2005

Here's another show, not as progressive as those all over the Schlippenbach post might wish for, but still a bit of a departure from the 40s stuff...

This is a mighty fine recording by the two tenor band of Dave Liebman and Ellery Eskelin, who also put out an official album on the great Hat Records label (hatOLOGY 615 / 2005). And even better, they're scheduled to do another album for Hat's current hatOLOGY series (see the "recent & upcoming" section of Eskelin's website).

And remember: support the artists! Go to their concerts, buy a disc or two from them!

Apologies for not having posted a lot of late.

I promise there will be more music up here soon (some out-ish stuff, for a change, and some smokin' tenors, too).
Also to all of those who posted comments in the last week or more, I will add replies now - finally!
I was just too busy to update my blog more regularly, sorry for that!

Johnny Griffin live in 1969 - on dime and right here, too!

The "Little Giant" has always been one of my favourite tenor sax players. The solo on the opening title of "Congregation" (Blue Note) is one of my favourites, and both "Way Out" and "Johnny Griffin Sextet" on Riverside are terrific albums.
Then there was his tenor combo with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - smokin'!

Death of Hi-Fi... and the RVG series

I know some may find it strange to find this on a music blog... but still, most of time at home, I listen to one of my three or four or five thousand CDs (I refuse to count them), or to one of my few of dozen LPs, or to CDRs burned from radio broadcasts or lossless downloads of live shows.
Hardly ever do I play MP3s, only having a notebook and no equipment to hook it up with my amplifier helps... I do play MP3s when commuting or when I'm out for a run, on my ubupod. However, in these situations I don't really care for sound quality, anyway, normally I still prefer having my daily listening dose in good sound quality.

Bear in mind that I am no audiophile at all, still I enjoy music much more - even at relatively low volume - if it unfolds in the air, in some kind of space (my messy chaotic room full of CDs, books, CDRs, and other stuff, usually).

As a jazz-related side-note: the RVG Edition by Blue Note - which has its merits, or rather had its merits once it was a series of albums that had not been out on CD for years - nowadays, many RVGs are reissues of albums that had been on CD just three or four years earlier, which is a pity, even more so as the CD reissue market seems to dry out slowly, and as there'd been some Blue Note material that has never been on CD in a regular way... why not bring out the Art Hodes sessions that only were part of a Mosaic set years ago, when I wasn't there to buy it... also lots of 60s material hasn't been on CD yet - more Rare Grooves would be a great idea, in my opinion! Okay, I got off the track, let me begin anew: the RVG series seems to me to be an example of that trend, to make reissues louder and more compressed. I have more or less stopped upgrading older Blue Note CDs since more often than not I feel the difference is not in quality, but rather in loudness and volume. If you know of discs where the sound is really an upgrade, other than the early BN sessions (Monk, Powell, Miles), please let me know - I'd be glad to get some recommendations! I got plenty of RVG discs myself, yet most of them are from the first years of the series (before EMI started throwing their copycrap cactus sh*t on the European market).

Possibly I'm much too harsh to good ole RVG to put this second topic in the same post as the third - I'm sure his efforts still are fine, compared to much of the crap that the majors keep flooding the market with. Apologies for that!

Post #100 - Some Food for Thought

Some thoughts in this jubilee post.

The year has started in an utterly bad way, by now I'm quite depressed - our kitten has been away ever since we let her out late night on December 30th. I looked around and asked some neighbours, but no one has seen her later than we did... I'm by now slowly accepting the thought that we might never see her again.

Update: bad news: Alas, as we were hanging up some notes about our missing cat, we got news that she was picked up close by on 31st. This morning we were finally able to reach the person in charge, and indeed she died on the evening of the 31st of December - may she rest in peace - she brought us (and most notably me) many moments of joy, and she had a good life at our place (at least for the past five years, before she was pushed around a bit, but then we offered to take care of her, as I had fallen for her charms...)

If I mention a concert I've had the luck to attend, that doesn't mean I have taped it, so quite possibly the answer to obnoxious requests is: no, I don't have any links, I don't even have a tape. And if I had a tape, it would go up on dime anyway (see #2).

Something else, about politeness etc: I don't see much of a point in anonymous comments (or comments from people with "profile not available").
Also, as live is - or in a more ideal world ought to be - "give and take", rather than "grab and run", I'd enjoy very much to see a few more comments from you who read and download what I post. Not just "thanks this is great" (that's far - I repeat: far! - better than not adding any comment at all), but I'd also enjoy some actual discussion of the music, some more comments in short that are more content than form!

Enough preaching and teaching for now - I hope you all had a more joyous start into 2008 than I had!

Blues, Boogie, & Bop: The 1940s Mercury Sessions (For Europeans Only #11)

Here's the last upload of the old year, and a very special one it is! This 7CD box set has been OOP for many years. It was a limited edition of 10'000 and contains the Mercury 1940s output of musicians like Albert Ammons (including a great father & son date with Gene Ammons on tenor), Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Jay McShann, Roy Byrd (Professor Longhair), Helen Humes, Buddy Rich's Big Band, Cootie Williams (including some Willis "Gator" Jackson), and others. There are six discs full of music, plus a seventh with alternates and a very rare, previously unreleased date by Mary Lou Williams (two tunes).

As usual, this comes in MP3 @ 320 kbs - don't ask for FLAC, I couldn't handle it that way. The links will be in the comments, as usual.

I've never been a huge fan, but I grew to like some of Oscar Peterson's music. Of course as a sideman he's on so many great albums, there's no way denying that many musicians have liked playing with him! Here's a radio broadcast in fairly good sound with one of those giants who often relied upon Peterson's service, the Frog, the big Ben Webster, from the early 1970s.

I apologize for the absence of further Prez posts... all the music has been uploaded for a while, but I've been thinking with what to continue after it was done and had no great ideas (now I have). Also as so often "real life" interfered with stuff demading lots of attention and time, and then last weekend some kind of stomach flu hit me... now it has gone on to just your normal olde flu, so things are getting better (he he he... check out the terrific Riverside album Cannonball Adderley and Milt Jackson made under that title, btw!).

Here's one fresh off the press - yesterday's solo recital at the great Alpentöne festival in Altdorf by Töbi Tobler on Hackbrett (hammered dulcimer). Quite a nice surprise! I like this honest and simple kind of folk music - though his horizon is much broader and he incorporates some of it in his music, too. Anyway, folk music shouldn't just be conserved as is, rather it should evolve, and here's a fine example for that!

The encore possibly is an old Swiss folk song, but I'm not quite so familiar with that kind of music... traditional folk music (not of the commercialised crap kind marketed on German/Austrian/Swiss TV) lies at the core of this music, though, paired with Tobler's experience as a drummer with various well-known Swiss musicians, as well as his own band, "Appezeller Space Schöttl".

Lester Young Live (10/16) - Spring 1952 Sessions (For Europeans Only #8)

Not much I can say... it's Pres, it's getting later in his career, he was different by then, but still good, contrary to those myths surrounding his career... the next volume will have more from this band (but with Knight identified as pianist - I'm not familiar with such early Wynton Kelly to dare a guess... even less so as I don't know Knight at all...). I mentioned already that Aaron Bell had a short spell with Duke Ellington's band in the early 60s, and Lee Abrams, around this time, was on that great 1953 trio session(s) of Al Haig. Not exactly well-known guys, but most definitely thorough pros at their game!

Count Basie w/Prez

Over on another blog, you can find some early Basie, in form of Chronological Classics discs, actually the first four of Basie's own band (the Bennie Moten material is sometimes included in Basie reissue series, such as the great French Masters of Jazz series, and to be sure it's absolutely essential, too!)

The way to get the Decca sides is by buying this box set (very cheap on Amazon US right now!), it's from the early 90s, but it sounds alright, and it has the best documentation you'll get, plus it includes a couple of alternates that aren't on the Classics. After the Decca period, things get pretty drab... Columbia has so far (and will forever, I'm afraid) refused to do the right thing and release their complete Basie sessions in any form (there were two French vinyl boxes, I think, but I'm too young to have them...), so Classics is the best way there is. I did mention the Masters of Jazz series, these were much better, including live material, alternate takes, and the best sound you could possibly get, but these are long gone... I managed to get a couple some years ago, and some others have been up on the late demonoid bit-torent tracker, but I'm still missing quite a bit. The other route to take is Definitive, they did two very crappy boxes in pretty bad sound, but at least all the master takes are there.
Then there's the RCA material, also done by Definitive, and there's a Japanese box, too. Those weren't the best years of the Count, alas.



Columbia did release a great 4CD compilation though, also on sale on US amazon right now. Sound is much better than on any other release of the same material, but it's far from complete, with more than one disc dedicated to (almost all of) the small group sessions Basie was involved with at Columbia's labels (including the fabulous "Jones-Smith Inc" session), then you get almost two discs of studio material, and on the fourth disc you get live material, including stellar Lester Young, and all three titles ever done by Billie Holiday with the Basie orchestra. Pretty nice, all in all, but not complete, and hence not enough...

Anyway, this is all material that would fit into my "For Europeans Only" series as it's all in public domain on our side of the pond, and I thought I'd just point out that some of it is available on that other site!

Lester Young Live (7-8/16) - 1950/1951 with Jesse Drakes, Ted Kelly & John Lewis, Gene Ramey, Jo Jones (For Europeans Only #6)

These sessions are fairly well-known, I think. The quartet dates with John Lewis have been released in various forms, for instance on the Italian bootleg label Jazz View.
I assume it's complete here, or at least as complete as it gets!
