Chonk, Charlie, Chonk! - king ubu presents Charlie Christian (For Europeans Only #12)

I have recently played some music by Charlie Christian again and figured why not share some of it here. My selection is neither a greatest hits nor an elaborate selection of rarities, rather just some great things (like the studio session with Lester Young and Count Basie), jams (including the famous studio jam of the Goodman band waiting for Benny to appear, as well as a lenghty jam from one of John Hammond's second "From Spirituals to Swing" concert), an encounter with Fred Astaire, and live recordings with Jerry Jerome (all of them!) and the Benny Goodman sextet.

The complete info is listed below - I did not break the music into CD chunks, as I have all of it on various CDs and will not burn this to CD myself, rather just copied it all onto my ubupod.

I hope you like the selection, and I hope you can ignore the occasional sonic problem in the live recordings. The infectuous groove Christian sets, in solo as well as in his forceful comping, is something you just have to dig, no matter about sound quality!

Why is it limited to only Europeans. These tracks generally are not available in Australia. Thanks.

Well, of course it's not limited to anyone... thing is in Europe, recorded music falls into public domain after 50 years, hence it's legal to share or sell music that's older (not the artwork and everything, though). In the US, copyrights are valid for a longer time.

Also, there's a Tadd Dameron composition by this name...

Things are multi-faceted, usually...

And non-anonymous comments are nicer to reply to (don't tell me in Australia you can't get a google/blogger account, please).

Thanks for responding. Its just the download doesn't work, which is why I thought there might be some geographical restriction based on my URL. Part 1 downloads, but when I go to extract it with Extract NOw, it says there has been a fatal error and nothing happens. With Part two, after download, the file name does not appear in Extract Now, and again it can't be taken further. I have had no such problems with any other downloads, and would appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks. mcphert1

G'day again, mate!

I use winrar (www.rarlab.com - the trial version will remain functional with just a little pop-up to click away after the trial period is over). With that programme, you just open file 1, and assuming you have all files downloaded, it unpacks all in one go. Opening just one part can create some difficulties... not that I understand the whys and hows, I'm sorry. Hope you can figure it out!

Thanks Ubu, it worked! I am particularly interested in the Jerry Jerome tracks - which I have on record but not in very good condition. By the way, I have put two videos on You Tube of 'Stompin at the Savoy', and 'Swing to Bop', using slide shows. Just type in 'mcphert1'and they'll come up. I am trying to spread the word about Charlie in my own way. Thanks again mate. mcphert1
