Ellington Legacy Orchestra - Aarau 1999

I was contacted about this by Peter Ugrin, the son of trumpet and violin player Petar Ugrin (1944-2001) playing here. Peter is himself a violin player. There are two beautiful tracks by Petar on his page, in particular, "Ozri Se V Gnevu" is stunning!

Ugrin was the only one to possibly take the role of Ray Nance, playing both trumpet and violin. The band here is a star-studded one, including a handful of Ellingtonians, most notably Aaron Bell, Duke's longtime bass player, who's on piano here. John Lamb and most of the brass players were with Ellington at one time or the other, too. In addition, there's another late trumpet great, Benny Bailey, and the late great John La Porta who can be heard playing a beautiful clarinet solo. Charli Persip is a fine big band drummer - one of his first gigs was with Dizzy Gillespie's 1956/57 orchestra!

So let me dedicate this post to Petar Ugrin and to his family.
And please pay a visit to Peter Ugrin's page and hear the fine music there!

Bobby Hutcherson & Tete Montoliu - Köln 1991

More great piano playing, this time by Catalanian pianist Tete Montoliu, in duo with vibes player Bobby Hutcherson.
A friend of mine maintains a great discography of Tete's recordings, and there's Miquel Jurado's book "Tete. Casi Autobiografia" (Madrid, 2005 - in Catalan only, I'm afraid).
In the discography, you'll see that Tete and Hutcherson played Bracknell in 1983 and did a 1984 session for Fantasy, recording enough for two albums - none of it has surfaced, alas (and with Concord owning that huge catalogue, things are lost and down the drain anyway).
This 1991 radio recording - coming in exceptionally good quality - from Cologne then is probably the best document we'll get from their collaboration. A truly sparkling session!

This is a complete upgrade over the version I previously had put to CD-R from an FM >DAT source. The sound is perfect and there are no interruptions from the announcer, thus leading me to believe that this could be direct from the soundboard or pre-FM source.
This is true spontaneous improvisation by two giants highly attuned to each other. Essential

Danilo Perez - Glasgow 1997

Pianist Danilo Perez, born 1966 in Panama, was a small sensation in 1996 with his "PanaMonk" album, interpreting Monk tunes to Latin rhythms. Perez has been a member of Wayne Shorter's terrific quartet since 2000 and continues to work with the rejuvenated master saxophonist.

Here's an earlier set by his trio. I got this one from dime many years ago and had it on my harddisk awaiting to be edited for a long time... this set features him with Avishai Cohen on bass and the great Jeff Ballard on drums.

Kenny Werner - Monterey 1998

Pianist Kenny Werner was born in 1951 and has been on the scene for over three decades now. In the 80s, he had a longer stint with Mel Lewis' Orchestra and he has played in the groups of Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez and others.
Werner also composed big band charts for orchestras such as the UMO Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band and the Danish Radio Big Band.
He has been leading various piano trios ever since the late 70s, featuring musicians such as Tom Rainey, Johannes Weidenmüller or Ari Hoenig. On this 1998 set, he is accompanied by Dave Carpenter on bass and the great Peter Erskine on drums

Von & Chico Freeman w/Hank Jones Trio - Den Haag 1990

Here's one sent to me by Trane aka sparti a few months ago. It came mostly untracked, so I did the usual bits of editing, also deleting radio talk while I was at it. Thanks go out to Trane who sent me a bunch of great shows in a trade recently!

Von has to be one of my all-time greats, and there's a post dedicated to him where you can find a bunch of shows, as well as a recording of his with Andrew Hill's trio here, and two somkin' hot 1977 sets from Amsterdam.

Chico has never been quite as big in this house, though he was a fine hot tenor early on. The pairing of him and his father is working just fine though, and with Hank Jones' trio in support, they have deluxe accompaniment here!

Max Nagl - Mainz 1999

Max Nagl is one of the more interesting characters around on the European jazz and music scene of the past years, composing for stage plays, dance and more.

Nagl, born 1960, has released a string of intriguing albums, the latest of them mostly on Hat Hut, including his fine project "Big Four" (with Steven Bernstein). Nagl has collaborated with novelist Franzobel, with Noel Akchoté (who's also a member of Big Four), Lol Coxhill, Austrian accordion derwish Otto Lechner, singer Julie Tippetts, and has dedicated albums to the music of Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman, as well as Robert Wyatt.

This post features his quartet with Josef Novotny at the piano, Anne Harvey on violin, and Patrice Héral on drums and percussion.

Charlie Mariano / Ali Haurand / Daniel Humair - Genève 1999

Charlie Mariano was one of the sad losses of the past year. He seemed to go on forever though, and I'm grateful for all the music he left us! Among his finest later efforts was a great Enja released titled "Deep in a Dream" - recommended!

Recently, Enja reissued Eberhard Weber's Colours albums, with Charlie, Rainer Brüninghaus, and drummers John Marshall and Jon Christensen (one at the time).

To read more, here are some links:
Guardian obituary
Boston Globe obituary
Charlie Mariano on AAJ

I shared a 2002 concert with his electric backing band and some guests from all over the world last year, and I have two more shows ready. Here's the first of them, a stellar trio with one of my favourite drummers, Daniel Humair, and Ali Haurand on bass. It comes from a dime download (thanks to jazzrita who shared it there!), and it was fine enough for me to edit it in order to get rid of all the disturbing radio chatter between the songs.

Randy Newman - Winterthur 1992

Here's a special treat for x-mas... a great solo concert by Randy Newman, recorded at Musikfestwochen Winterthur, at a club called "Albany" (of course Newman has some jokes about that...)

This is one of the x-mas gifts for mère ubu, but I thought some of you might enjoy this, too!

The encores are missing, but it seems a one-disc bootleg of this concert has them (while missing several other tracks), so I'm asking anyone who has that bootleg to please get in touch or just put up FLACs of those encores, please!

Recently shared on dime (thanks a lot!), I re-tracked the whole set and did some fixes here and there (there was some duplication somewhere, for instance).

Michel Petrucciani Solo - Berlin 1995

Here's a special offering - a 1995 solo concert by Michel Petrucciani, shared originally on dime by "duckberry", however it was banned for having lossy lineage, and he was forced to do a new transfer of an aging tape... here we have what is the better-sounding version - never mind the minidisc/attrac file format in the lineage!

This comes with duckberry's blessings - thanks a lot!

Rising of Level (200%) of Track #3: WaveLab
Wav to Flac (Level 8): Easy CD-DA Extractor

This concert is one of my treasures. I never saw it anywhere, so I thought it to be worth the effort. Whith only a cable as antenna and my old Denon tuner (Nakamichi or Akai tape deck) I captured it in my ground floor student room. I remember how glad I was that Michel's 1st set perfectly fitted an side A of the tape. Luckily the clapping was long enough to turn the cassette around.
About 10 years ago I copied some of my tape recordings to minidisc. This version seems to be be best I have. Only track #3 is from a fresh transfer from the old tape, because apparently ten years ago I forgot to copy it.
If there should be an audio freak out ther in cyber space who might create a superior version: I recently copied the original tape via new and pretty good soundcard (Asus Xonar D") in a 24bit version to pc. No problem to send a copy.
Please feel free to cintribute to the setlist or to create some artwork.
Do not sell or convert to lossy format.

:: ubu note ::

duckberry seeded this one dime, it was banned as he mentioned still having the original tape.
He did a new transfer with the following comment:

"About 10 years ago I copied some of my tape recordings to minidisc. Yesterday I tried to ul the minidisc version, because in my ears it sounds better then the 14 years old tape. But that torrent was banned, because in theory a fresh transfer from the master tape should be better than the one with the lossy minidisc (ATRAC) step. But the (lossy) minidisc version has come much better through the last decade than the tape ..."

and he kindly allowed me to share the lossy lineage but better sound version over here!

:: ubu notes ::

Came as Sound Board, but there are a few too many radio announcements...

The radio announcement at the end of CD2#2 gives June 26 as the date, and a location that does sound different, I don't understand it though.
When this was up on dime, it was all seeded as from June 25 and from the Bimhuis.

A Dutch friend helped me figure out the announcements - he wrote:

info on one of the broadcasts is up on the VPRO Jazz Op 4 site:
http://www.vpro.nl/programma/jazzopvier/afleveringen/2233491/
(note: this is broadcast by VPRO, the other one by NPS)

there it is mentioned that this 14 nov 1999 VPRO broadcast covers 25 june and that a previous NPS broadcast covered 26 june

on CD2tr2 the guys mentions this was music from 26 june and that next week we'll hear 25 june

CD2tr3: "...you can listen to part of the final tune of the first set in the Bimhuis on that 26th, a composition by Griffin: 'Chicago Calling'"

on CD1tr4 the lady mentions VPRO plans to (re-)broadcast the second evening on 30 jan 2000, but apparantly this never happened as a Frisell concert was broadcast on that date.

no info online on the NPS broadcast as far as I can('t) find it-

- separated fm outro from end of CD2#

Note: the first set ends after #3, as this came (from dime), "Invitation" ended disc one. If this was indeed a live broadcast, maybe "Invitation" comes from the beginnig of the first set and was broadcasted during the break until the second set began? The track was edited in a way that allows no clear judgement, but I have some doubts about an 18:17 minute track fitting into the break.

separated #1 and #2

Notes on the setlist:

CD1#1 Von seems to navigate through some standards or at least standards chord changes. Around 10:50 he quotes "Isn't It Romantic" for a moment.
CD1#2 is mostly a bass, then a drum solo, Hill enters at the end.
CD1#3 sounds like another standard, or possibly "Alfie" at the beginning, then goes into what sounds like an original, but at 4:45, Von goes into "Isn't It Romantic" again and stays with it, but the very final line is the "Alfie"-opening line again...
CD2#1 opens with a lengthy drum solo implicating a typically intricate Hill rhythm, Von opens quoting "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)". Later on it sounds as if he's playing "I Can't Get Started", but he continues alluding to "I Got It Bad". When Von enters again at 22:00 they go into a bop classic (Dig?), then around 24:30 Von goes into "Sweet Georgia Brown".
CD2#2 opens with a sax cadenza, leading into "I'll Remember April", after a lengthy trio segment, Von goes into "A Night in Tunisia", not without quoting "Mr. P.C." (22:14), then quoting "What Is This Thing Called Love" and possibly alluding to the fourth movement of "A Love Supreme". Following a short solo cadenza, Von goes into "Ain't Misbehavin" (31:05), at 33:00 he then goes into "Lester Leaps In"

The following was posted on dime, I think:
Sweet Georgia Brown
Dig
I'll Remember April
A Night in Tunisia
Salt Peanuts
It sort of fits with parts of the second set...

Randy Weston - Birmingham 1991

Randy Weston's one of my very favourites! I've had the pleasure of seing him live one and a half years ago, in trio with Alex Blake and Neil Clarke.
Here's a stunning show with his African Rhythms Quintet and Gnawa Musicians, shared on dime by dsgtrane, edited by yours truly. The original seed also included the Geri Allen show I posted yesterday.

Geri Allen - London 1991

And a bit more of a mainstream one: Geri Allen, in trio with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. This was shared as a filler to one of dsgtrane's many great Randy Weston shares on dime, quite some time ago (the Weston show will also be posted!) and I thought albeit short, it's good enough to be heard on it's own, and applied the usual bit of fixing.

Billy Higgins - Perugia 1998

Here's another show by the band of a great drummer - smilin' Billy Higgins!
Higgins was the drummer on Ornette Coleman's first records and then went on to set the groove on countless classic Blue Note albums by the likes of Lee Morgan, Bobby Hutcherson, Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, or Jackie McLean.
Higgins also recorded with such diverse artists as Thelonious Monk, Eddie Harris, David Murray, Sandy Bull, Jaki Byard, Teddy Edwards, Don Cherry, Johnny Hartman, Tete Montoliu, Art Pepper, Cedar Walton, Abdullah Ibrahim, Pat Metheny, Randy Weston, and countless others. The photo below shows him in August 2000, performing with Charles Lloyd's quartet (he's on several of Lloyd's ECM releases, including a lovely double disc duo release titled "Which Way Is East").

Monk's Casino - Hamburg 1999

And finally, one for young and old, tall and short, smart and dumb... the all encompassing music of one Thelonious Monk, performed by the great group "Die Enttäuschung" with Alexander von Schlippenbach at the piano. Don't miss this one!

It took me a while to figure this out, with the help of the official release on Intakt records, and to re-track it as nicely as possible - hope you'll enjoy it! It's to my knowledge the most complete of the live recordings to be found by this group (well, there may be complete AUD versions, but this one is in perfect FM quality)!
