Carla Bley - Chateauvallon 1977

Roller-rinkey organs, fervent soulful hymns by the horns... well, Carla Bley's band and songs, of course! With Gary Windo going apeshit, Hugh Hopper thudding on bass, Andrew Cyrille beating them drums, Mike Mantler blowing the trumpet, Roswell Rudd, John Clark and Bob Stewart completing the brass, the late great Elton Dean on alto, Terry Adams on piano... as well as an unknown guitar player soloing rather prominently on several of the songs included. Tempted? Well yeah! Some great Carla Bley here, once more, this time by a rather unusual band as you've seen!

Check out my earlier Carla Bley post: Austin 1978

If anyone has a clue who the guitar player might be, please comment! I googled up and down, but it seems everybody has the same info as me, and no one noticed a guitar player so far...
Edit: it's John Clark, thanks a lot for the info!

An addition to the great minor version of the US anthem is over on my musings page.

The European Tour 1977 CD lists John Clark as doubling on french horn and guitar.

Many thanks for putting this up, I'm a hog for anything with Elton Dean on it, though Windo, Hopper, Mantler, Adams and Bley are all favorites too.

King Crimson > Keith Tippett > Elton Dean is the prism through which my musical universe opened up back those many years ago and anything else you have with Elton please post it. I have everything in his discography except the 3 cassettes he self-issued back in 88-89, and I'll still buy any new Soft Machine release just because I can't get enough.

Hey, thanks a lot for the info regarding the guitar player! That makes sense! Don't have that CD... too many good things around to have all I'd like to own!

Hi Ubu a grat thanks for those last Carla Bley Posts, I’m downloading the 1980 concert and I’ve just downloaded the Chateauvallon and Austin dates. That ten piece band was an amazing group. I even prefer the Austin date with about the same band but with an exceptional tracks choice: Ida Lupino is in my opinion one of the best “songs” ever written by Carla or anyone else.
So a million of thanks for Your generosity and good taste.
Some annotations and corrections. The Chateauvallon concert has yet been issued on the web in another blog here the link: http://jazzbootleg.blogspot.com/2008/07/carla-bley_30.html. The tracking list is the same with the same two “unknown” pieces. In fact the two , almost strangely, “unknown” tracks are among the most celebrated and important Bley’s compositions: the one You cal “unknoww hymn “ is in fact Drinking Music and the other track is Dreams So Real. On another blog You can find even an artigianal cd cover with the Chateauvallon date paired with the Paris 1980 concert here (http://wulfware.de/covers/Index3/CBl7708&8011.htm). I’ve compared titles and titling of the 1977 french date and I can send You the info file corrected.
Just another suggestion: after the hearing of Your post I went to hear again those magic album called European Tour 1977 and I’ve researched a little on the web triyn’ to reconstruct the European Tour. Here some , still incomplete informations

CARLA BLEY BAND EUROPEAN TOUR

The European tour began in 1997august the 23rd and ended in September the 10th of the same year and consisted of some (hwo many?) tour dates at least these four reported in Hugh Hopper site:

France - Chateauvalllon 24 august 1977
Wengen, - ()?
Italy - Alassio 2 or 3 september 1977
Germany – Munich (?)

The dates are taken from the web and from the Italian Jazz Magazine quoted after.
Musica Jazz (Italian jazz magazine) Numero di novembre 1977 (pagg: 40 - 41)
Festival del jazz di Alassio - "Jazz ad Alassio", Alassio dal 2 al 3 settembre 1977.
Among others Carla Bley & Jazz Composer’s Orchestra - (Mantler, Mike - Clark, John - Cyrille, Andrew - Stewart, Bob - Dean, Elton - Window, Gary - Hopper, Hugh - Addams, Terry - Rudd, Roswell) Concert report by Pino Candini

CARLA BLEY BAND EUROPEAN TOUR 1977, Watt/8

Carla Bley did indeed tour Europe in the summer on 1977--with an amazing ten-piece band.
It is important to note that this album was not recorded live. Rather, EUROPEAN TOUR 1977 was taped in the studio while the group was in Germany. The record was subsequently mixed in New York, at Bley and Michael Mantler's Grog Kill Studio.
For this tour, Bley assembled a curious but highly effective band. Her ensemble integrates players from the jazz avant-garde (drummer Andrew Cyrille, trombonist Roswell Rudd), former Soft Machine members (bass guitarist Hugh Hopper and saxophonist Elton Dean), and an iconoclastic American piano player (NRBQ's Terry Adams). And that's only half of the band!
Bley writes music that effectively draws on the distinct voices of her formidable soloists. The four pieces are full of Bley's musical wit, warmth, and playfulness. "Spangled Banner Minor And Other Patriotic Songs" is a dazzling parade. The other numbers are so perfectly titled as to evoke their essences in less than five words each.

Carla Bley Band: Carla Bley (tenor saxophone, organ); Elton Dean (alto saxophone); Gary Windo (tenor saxophone); Michael Mantler (trumpet); John Clark (French horn, guitar); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Bob Stewart (tuba); Terry Adams (piano); Hugh Hopper (bass, bass drum); Andrew Cyrille (drums).
Recorded at Bavaria Musik Studios, Munich, Germany in September 1977.
• 1. Rose And Sad Song
• 2. Wrong Key Donkey
• 3. Drinking Music
• 4. Spangled Banner Minor And Other Patriotic Songs

If anyone else here is interested can help me finding the complete sequence of dates, with jazz magazine reviews, photos and recordings of others concert. It would be a nice, and new, thing to reconstruct the amazing Carla Bley 1977 European Tour.
An hypotesis: I’m from Italy and I like to think that the famous photo of the Carla Bley band in the inlay of the Lp (is that the only one taken? I don’t believe so), taken by the italian photographer Roberto Masotti was taken in Alassio or at least in Chateauvallon. I say this even according to the seaside dressing and behaviour of some musicians and lookin’at the Mediterranean background vegetation.

See You Thanks Again.  LYM

LYM, thanks for identifying the two "unknown" songs!

As with the other Bley shows, I got this one from dimeadozen.org. I did see the MP3 version on that other blog, while looking around hoping to find an ID for the guitar player (that problem has already been solved). Anyway, this is my own edit, and it's of course lossless, so it's superior to what you'll find elsewhere (unless of course someone else fixed these shows and shared them as well, but I don't search around to make sure my offerings are unique, I just share some things I enjoy!)

That 1977 album looks more and more tempting, I'll have to buy that one some day!

As for the European Tour, I'm afraid I can't help you. My humble archives mostly help with regard to Swiss shows/festivals, but even there I can only help with regard to about the last ten years. In Summer 1977 when this tour took place, my birth was almost two years ahead in the future...

Btw: it's not that the unknown tunes didn't sound familiar... I've not been able to really digest music the way one should of late, just played some things now and then, without really having time to spend with them... and my ability to bring together tunes and their titles isn't that well-developped, I'm afraid (Monk is worst! I recognize most of his tunes, but I can never put a name to them...)
