Lester Young - Live and in Chronological Order

Here's the whole shebang... a re-upload of the 16CD set of (nearly) all of Lester Young's known live recordings. I got this from a kind soul many years ago, and the files that are still up (about half of them) from the first round are among the most downloaded of all the years I've had this blog... so I figured it would be time to bring this on again.

The files are unchanged - but the information for the two August 1956 sessions has been updated below (and in the overview file that you'll find in the comments).

If you have any corrections or additions to the discography, please leave a comment and do let me know!

Just in these last few weeks i rediscovered my favourite Lester Young and was lookin' for the Masters Of Jazz but...nothing at all on the web! This little search reminded me of an astonishing good box set and few days after I found that here! THANKS
Just a few discographycal annotations.
I've never been so proud of being and italian, not at all in this last decade. One of the moments in which I've been happy and proud of being born in Italy was when an italian label from Milano named Black Saint published, in 1987, a 22Lp box set named "Live and Private Recordings In Chronological Order". When the Lp disappeared they ri-published in 16 cds made of double or triple box and then a Japanese label (named Sound Hills Records)reissued the 16 cd set.
Thanks again for this terrific musical gift!. Would You ever upgrade it to fla? It would be greatly appreciated.

SEE YOU LYM

ubu said...

LYM, that 16CD version is of course the source of this post.

Are you sure the original LP version was on Black Saint?

LYM said...

Sure. But I was sure that there would have been a misunderstanding. The label Black Saint was an omonimous of the most famous and celebrated Black Saint/Soul Note one. That name came perhaps from a shop in Milano (now unlckily closed) specialized in jazz that produced the Lester Young and a Charlie Parker box set. Take a look here: http://jazzrecordscene.com/lesteryoungliveandprivaterecordingsinchronologicalorderpresbox01-22.aspx

RE: Lester Young – Live And Private Recordings In Chronological Order

Ubu, this is an absolutely fantastic post - most appreciated!

Thanks so much for these. I'm a newbie regarding file formats, so these files are suitable for an iPod, but not for burning to an audio CD format, is that correct? Or does some type of file conversion have to take place?

ubu said...

Yes, these are suitable for ipods, but with most software you should easily be able to burn these to audio CDR, too - that doesn't make much sense though as MP3 are lossy and need much less space (and offer lesser quality) than audio CDR grants.
But then often with such old and non hi-fi recordings, the quality difference is barely noticeable at all...

Thanks for this much Prez. A labor of love that is received with same.

Ubu, thank you very much I will relish every one of these recordings. I'm sure I've heard many of these, but certainly never have I found the sheer volume of material in one place like this. I haven't been here in a very long time, so you might expect that this is a very nice surprise for me. After all this time, Prez is still the man--for me, anyway. A tip of the pork pie from my avatar. Great photos!

I congratulate you Ubu for this big task. It's amazing. I downloaded it carefully and now I'm listening, I noticed that many of this recordings are among my Lester´s CD, but not in the same order that on the post; anyway, for those people that doesn't have many recordings of Lester, is a fantastic collection.

As I left the old Jazz Record Mart at 7 West Grand in Chicago one steamy summer day back in 1972, I couldn't help but parouse the stack of $1 lps near the door. (That old store was so packed with quality product- the city finally told them they'd have to clear it for larger aisles or risk fines for fire ordinance violations.)
A youthful Prez fan growing up in a Led Zepplin era, I saw a deal I simply could not pass up despite it meaning a fifteen-plus mile walk home due lack of el fare: a one dollar vinyl lp on the long defunct "Charlie Parker Records" label, with giant words across the front- LESTER YOUNG.
A discerning listener, I determined these to be live recordings made at Minton's Playhouse in 1944 with Prez, Denzil Best, Dizzy, George Wallington and an unknown bassist. Only five long tracks filled the two sides: Sundays, Destination Moon,"Tres' Blues", I Cover the Waterfront, Lester Leaps In (this last track ending with the audible voice of a fan saying: "Hey man- dig the m----er f---er's walk!") This was pre-war/ pre "DB Blues" Lester at his absolute finest hour, along with a young, energetic rising star- Dizzy. Some of the greatest proto-bop ever recorded!
The Lp is in deep storage a thousand plus miles away- but at some point this summer I have every intention of dusting it off and posting it on you tube and elsewhere. Maybe even here with enough interest generated.

wonderful! precious material, if you have the possibility please post also a flac version, would be very nice, cheers

ubu said...

No FLAC here, sorry - would be too much work for which I don't have time. And after all, the sound quality of most of this isn't really harmed by MP3, I think.

i post this with complete understanding that our host here (ubu) is asking not to be hounded about reposting items. Fair enough. I hope I'm not being rude by asking if any folks who have downloaded it already because of his generosity would be willing to post or dropbox me some of it. I'm a huge Lester Young fan and scholar and I've got a lot of this already, but I've had no success trying to find much of it for sale. thanks, karlstraub@hotmail.com

I really wish it were like this ... but one major part why this blog was fun no more: it's a very one-way thing.

Someone has to do it, might as well be you. It may seem a thankless task, but you are doing it for posterity and that's all of us!!
When we find a treasure trove like this, we ask ourselves why we never looked for it before. Perhaps, because it was not there. Cheers, all the best and thank you for keeping the memory of the Prez alive in our hearts and tears.

ubu said...

Woo ha, good one ... it was here, it was grabbed 300 to 400 times - but the spirit of our days seems to be hit and run and each on his own, alas.

Will look, I think I've recently saw the RAR files somewhere, stay tuned.

A welcome resurrection Ubu, thank you. There are too many sax players living today who have not digested Lester Young.

Hi Lewis

This happens all the time lately, that files become inaccessible because of server issues (I assume) on the provider's end. They woulnd't even let me know, stuff just disappears.

Will check it out and put the links up again here:

Looks like CD 15 is no longer available. Any chance of a repost? Thanks!

David R. Brockman said...

CD 01 is also coming up as unavailable.

ubu said...

I hate that shit - the files are around but the servers are down ... and while there's something about staff looking for it, files will disappear without me even getting a notice. Thanks for the alert, guess I got to put each file up seven times with the lousy service that you get nowadays.

I know you do not do reuploads on request, but I just found this, so I was wondering if you could make an exception? I know this is a lot, but this is definitely quite the find, so would you mind doing so? Thank you
