Herbie Hancock "VSOP III" - Athens 1985

Here's the last of the sideman shows of Freddie Hubbard. I got this from dime recently though it had been shared quite a while ago. Tony Williams was one of the first jazz musicians I ever tried to write about in the high school paper... still a favourite! And Bobby "Booby" Hutcherson is cool, too. Herbie did some of the most astonishing and lyrical piano playing of all jazz in the 60s and went places later on (I love his Mwandishi band! The first two Headhunters albums are friggin' cool, too!). Ron Carter... well, he's Ron Carter, the man who kept the second Miles Davis quintet connected to earth somehow, even though his intonation might not be to everyone's taste. And then, there's Freddie on top of it!

Thanks to Simon for the cover!

Thanks for this..Interesting twist on the more well-known VSOP group with Wayne Shorter..Actually I've often found these 'super-groups' to be a little dissapointing compared to a regular working unit..But still the line-up speaks for itself! Gotta hear it...

sasha, I share your ambivalence about all star bands in general, but with Herbie, it's like his never-ending flow of ideas always keeps things fresh! And somehow I cherish each opportunity to hear him in a straight jazz setting, though I do love the Mwandishi sextet and the first two Headhunters album, but after that I lose interest in most of what he did, at least as far as studio albums go - his reunion with Wayne Shorter though was ample proof that he still has awesome skills and is prepared to be thrown in a very open setting and deliver the goods there!

I'm ready to listen. I've watched his career and listened to his music for a long time. An amazing musician. Looking forward to the end of the d/l! Thank you so much.

Thanks! This is one of the few versions of "Paper Moon" I've really enjoyed, and it's nice to hear Hutch with the band.
