Aldo Romano - Porquerolles 2008

Continuing the great drummers theme... check here, as well as these more recent posts featuring Max Roach, Joe Morello, Art Blakey, Tony Williams (both with Hubbard), Daniel Humair, Joe Chambers, Tony Williams again (with VSOP III), and Louis Moholo (with Keith Tippett & the MinAfric Orchestra)
The Freddie Hubbard shows also include Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes, and Louis Hayes, among others. Plenty of great drums, that was quite usual with Freddie!

Now here we have Aldo Romano, another of my favourite drummers, and next to Humair one of the main forces of modern jazz in France, or rather Europe more generally. Romano has played with so many musicians, it's impossible to even think of listing them all... just let me mention Don Cherry (some of the live recordings from the sixties are now available on ESP Disk), Keith Jarrett, Steve Lacy, Rolf & Joachim Kühn, Massimo Urbani, Michel Petrucciani, Joe Lovano, Philippe Catherine, Robin Kenyatta, Bill Dixon, François Jeanneau, and of course the great Romano-Sclavis-Texier trio.

In 2004, he won the renowned JazzPar price.

Here, Romano is leading his latest band (to be heard on the CAMJazz release "Just Jazz") with Mauro Negri on clarinet, long-standing buddy Henri Texier on bass, and the terrific alto player Géraldine Laurent - check out her Time Out Trio if you have a chance, she's really special!
